Cracking out coins???

How do the major TPG's deal with this. They track the number of coins that they certify in Pop reports but how do they (or do they) adjust the pop reports for the practice of cracking for upgrades....or is this denoted on the forms when you submit them. Sorry if this is a repeat question on the board.

  • They don't adjust the pop reports. Unless you send in the insert they have no way of knowing that you cracked
out a coin. If you send in a holdered coin for a regrade, they will adjust the pop report accordingly.
  • And with the number of people playing the Registry Set game doing resubmissions all the time (do you think they send in the ticket when they're trying to get a better grade???)...

well, you can do the math. Take the pop reports with a dumptruck load of salt.

The crack out game is played both ways... perhaps a poll would give you an idea how many submit the inserts/original holder. And for those who send an original NGC holder to cross at PCGS, do we think that PCGS contacts NGC to say their holder is no longer viable? I think not. I would say that in many cases (high populations, probably not low counts) the populationa reports are highly inaccurate. Cheers, RickO
  • PCGS pays 50 cents for inserts, and you probably wouldn't send it in with the cracked out coin. Some people save them up
and submit them all at once. If we want the pop reports to be accurate (and we do, because it benefits us), then sending
in your inserts is worth it.

OK RickO, I think you need to create a poll. image

that's too much to ask...............for many many collectors. they won't take the time.

I remember seeing photos of some dealers that had drawers full of inserts. Someone sent in a bunch and got over $1000 back from PCGS. I wish more people would do that.
  • Does anyone think that NGC sends labels from PCGS crossovers back to PCGS for the $0.50 fee once they have a lot of them?

Now THAT is a very good question.
