Found some coins...

I just found a bag of old coins in my closet. Most of them are from the 50s and 60s. A lot of quarters and dimes, a few Buffalo Head nickels and some other stuff. Do you think it's worth anything?

Yes, they are worth something. Now, if they are worth alot, that is another question. You will need to post some pictures of some of them for us to start to gage the value.

List some dates/mints and their denomination.

  • Dimes and qtrs from 1964 and earlier have silver....they have some value....the Buffalos are usually worth more than face value(sometimes a LOT more) depending on grade and condition.

Dimes, quarters, and half dollars dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver. They're worth about 10x face value based on the current price of silver. That is, a quarter from 1961 would be worth about $2.50, a dime from 1950 would be worth about $1.00, etc.

The buffalo nickels are likely worth less. If you can read a date, they're worth maybe in the range of $0.50-$1.00 apiece. Maybe a little more or less. If you can't read a date, they're worth in the range of $0.05-$0.15 apiece. FWIW, I'm less confident about these numbers than I am about the ones for the silver.

Of course, it's always possible that you have a particularly rare item in the mix. Odds are against it, of course. Rare items are described as rare because, well, they're rare...
  • I'm a card guy, don't know much about coins. There are a lot of pennies with the wheat on back. Are those any good?
  • jonathanbjonathanb Posts: 3,754 ✭✭✭✭✭
Wheats are worth about $0.02-$0.04 apiece, but if you have fewer than several hundred you might have a hard time finding a buyer.

Again, rare ones are worth more.
  • How many wheat cents you got? If you are interested in selling them Please let me know.

Post some pics to make this thread worthy. Or go buy a case of image with them and piss the night away
  • You didn't say if they were part of GRANDPA's HOARD, or if you dug them up in a field, or if they all have strange red/blue/green/magenta/yellow/orange colors on them, or...... image

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but is this worth more than 10 cents?

  • Yes it will melt for 1.30 might pick up 2-3 for it
  • Your merc is worth ~$1.30 in silver content alone, not regarding any numismatic value.

I have some dimes that look like that, but in a little better condition. Not mint or anything, but good shape for the age. SHould I get them graded?
  • Depends on the year and if they are Full Split bands coins. Any way you can post pics of them ?

Coin hopper at the store, get green bacs for the change, seems like junk if you would pack in the closet in the first place?

OK, if someone came on the card board and said "I've got a bunch of cards I found, I'm a coin guy so don't know much about cards," what would your response be?

  • The pessisism is annoying guys. Most is probably just worth the silver content. This tells you what each coin is worth as faar as silver content. Text

Try the PCGS price guide to give you some sort of idea on which date to look out for or error. Search through them and come back with any questions you might have. I would take a sheet of paper out for each type of coin and make a grid to place the coins in as you sort them out.

Is this the same as or different than the bag you found in your garage a year ago?

I'm not the OP, but since you guys helped with my the dime I posted above, I thought I'd give this a try. Is this worth more than 5 cents? Thanks in advance.

Ok I was an idiot and went into the card forum and asked about the closet full of cards I had and would trade them for coins and here is the reply from our poster ..... which actually was good advice Date Posted: Dec/07/2007 2:40 PM

If there is anything worthwhile in there I'd be willing to talk price, but most collections of stuff from that era have been picked through and all that's left is worthless commons. Quantity really isn't the issue because no one really wants 150,000 .01 cards. If you have some of the big rookie cards from the 70s and 80s then it could be worthwhile at a price in the thousands, but I'd need a better idea of what's in there before talking price. Most of the stuff from the modern era is overproduced and worth next to nothing, but there are a handful of cards that still command a premium. I'd have to have a better idea of exactly what's there and the condition to even think about driving up though. If you could dig through a little and maybe scan a few things you think are good, that might help. Or if there are any complete sets that you could list.

As a coin guy, it would be like me saying I have 100,000 coins from 1970-present, without telling you what coins are there or the condition.

You gave good advice CD back at ya

The Susan B. Anthony rookie coin isn't worth much. Now, the George Washington rookies when he was with Denver and San Francisco are a different story. image
