And this is a good reason my hobby is coins (updated)

My daughter loves to ride horses. She is 10 years old and has been riding for 5 years. Today, the horse she was riding spooked, and tossed her off. I had been wondering if she would go through childhood without knowing a broken bone, but now she will. She hit the metal rails with her mouth, and broke her jaw and displaced 3 teeth.

I know coins can be a competitive sport sometimes, and it hurts a little when you pay too much for a coin, or miss out on a coin by not paying enough--but I will take that pain anyday of the week when you compare what other hobbies can do to you.

I tend to think positively, and all I can think is thank goodness she hit the rails with her mouth and not her head. I am sitting here in my office thinking how close i came to not having a daughter tonight, and cherishing the fact that I still do.

Anything can happen, at anytime, but just remember, enjoy what you have while you can--kaelasdad

Updated: so far so good, she woke up today with lips like Julia Roberts, but is eating soft food and watching a movie. Not as much pain as I anticipated or she is handling it well. We wont know about her teeth until a week or so, if they turn a different color ala Garths post, that will be very unfortunate. I wanted to thank you all for your posts and support--I showed my daughter and it cheered her up to see that people cared. Thank you, Russ

Very sorry to hear about your daughter's accident. I hope she heals soon and doesn't experience too much pain.

I also hope she doesn't lose her love of horses and continues to ride, and I hope you continue to support her.

Coin collecting is a great, safe and relaxing hobby...but to enjoy the flavor of life, sometimes you have to take big bites - thrills, chills, pain, and all.

Ouch. Hope she gets to feeling better soon.
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

  • Been stepped on, kicked and thrown but never injured that badly. Hope she heals quick and gets back on.

My girls are 16 and 21. I'm sitting here nodding my head in agreement.

I hope that your daughter's recovery is swift and complete.

10 years old, ouch, that means they where probably her permanent teeth!

I broke two of my front teeth in half when I was ten, did a face plant off a bicycle. I had to have silver front teeth until I was 16, then they gave me plastic ones that turned yellow after a few months. Didn't finally get porcelain crowns until I was 18.

There are no pictures of me smiling between age 10 and 18. I hope your daughter is alright and I hope she keeps her smile.
  • Man that is awful...hope she gets better quickly.

All the best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery for her. Hope she isn't too shaken up emotionally too. My daughter broke a wrist on a bike fall and that was hard enough for us.

Just watched Gone With the Wind the other night and don't think I could put my girls on horses too soon after that.

I only let my daughters ride the bus.

I am happy she is not too badly hurt, Russ. Give her a special hug from all your numismatic friends.

My daughter is there too. Horse friggin crazy!!! It drives me crazy to watch her jump and such but kids have to find their own way. Even if it is a broken jaw. So sorry for that. I never listened either. image
  • Got 2 sons myself....grown up now (or they are supposed to be), ages 23 & 21....I remember them growing up, playing football, hockey...boy, the tears, the broken bones, the DOCTOR BILLS!! My nieces, who are 8 & 6, are into equestrian riding (I cant make heads or tails of it, but I do go to watch them and support them, but I dont see how a girl that little/young can control a beast/animal big enough to stomp the bejesus out of her...the bravery, the confidence they have is amazing ). I've seen the rails you speak of. You are right, count them blessings she DIDNT hit it with her head. Those helmets arent the most protective gear around. And, I hope (and it will be the best thing for her) she wants to get right back on and ride. Learn how to overcome her fears...she will be just fine, dad. My heart goes out to the little gal and I hope she gets to chew on real food real soon....I'll say a prayer for her, Kaelasdad!

  • My heart goes out to your family - children are our most beloved gifts. I grew up riding and was a daredevil, got thrown a few times but was lucky and only hurt my pride. Since she's been riding half her life, I'm sure she'll be going back when she's healed. She'll learn from this and will be more cautious. Thank God it wasn't worse. I'll pray she heals quickly.

This is why most of us, as adults, stay with our relatively safe coin hobby!

    Edited to add.... see below!
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.
  • Glad to hear it wasn't worse than what it was. I have a five year old myself, and my dad (her grandpa) just finally sold his farm and horses. I was always worried that something bad could happen when she eventually took up riding, she was already helping to clean stalls and all that. That is one thing I don't have to fear anymore, thank goodness. We parents have enough to worry about! Here's wishing your girl a speedy recovery...
imageQuid pro quo. Yes or no?
  • bummer that your daughter got hurt and very glad that it wasn't any worse. kids bounce back quickly and she'll probably be up and on the horse again before you can blink your eye!

I hope she recovers quickly... sometimes I think it hurts the parents worse than it does the kids.... not in actual physical pain, but the heartache and emotion is rough. Cheers, RickO
