Without reading the next 3 pages, would it be possible to know if a roll contained a smaller diameter coin without opening the roll? Perhaps an X-ray at the airport.

Someone in another thread ran a few tests and said with a sensitive scale you can pick up the weight difference without even unwrapping the roll. Off the top of my head a quarter planchet is about 2 grams lighter than a dollar planchet.

I just thought of this, don't the first 50,000 go to the first day covers? Wouldn't that be where they should have been found? Maybe these weren't the first day of mintage and they could be in later rolls rather than the early boxes. Just a thought.
Where is a good bank to start at in Philly that gets coins directly from the US Mint? I can ask my brother to buy a box and have his kid look through them. Might be fun for him.

If they were in First Day Covers, that would be a great error...serious failure in QA. There's no way of knowing where in the system they will/if turn up. I would think if anything close to what CW first reported (70k-140k) that there would be a few stragglers finding there way into the big bags and slip into some rolls for us to find.
In fact, I'm so confident that some will find this error that I will pay anyone $1.25 for each example.
And supposing they'll end up in quarter rolls..............

Any $1 Pres. roll containing (1) or more Quarter Planchets, will weigh approx. 2 grams or more less then a regular roll, all of the rolls we have weighed so far (about 700) have a weight of 200.3 to 200.7.....
<< <i>Monroe dollar coin's $250.00 bag's From the mint. Has anyone purchased any? >>
Those are usually slow sellers. I believe they sold around 400 of the James Madison bags. Personally I think the overall quality of coins in the bags is superior to the rolls. I bought several of the bison nickel bags and they had far less nicks and pings then the rolled coins.
SO, it's been about a week. I guess there are none to be found or atleast not 100,000. if there were that many, I would think one would have been found by now.
No off metals but I see edge letters are not striking properly on some due to damage on the edge lettering dies from striking on the quarter planchets.
I agree that it's probably a safe assumption that if there were 100K pieces out there, alot of them would have been found and reported by now.
I'm still of the opinion that SOME will be found - 5, 50, ??

I find it a fascinating error and hope that some do show up. The first one to hit the bay would go for strong money is a given. But perhaps those finding the errors, if any are found, are holding off and not reporting so many to make these more appealing. Seems like it would be a good strategy considering what happened to the Washington Dollar Smooth Edged Error.
That's only well and good if everyone else has the same strategy, and does not report THEIR finds........
I'd think if they were found, folks would want the "bragging rights" to the first or second coin discovered, given human nature.......

I guess the numbers will be very small if any.
Also, I thought that Mr. Weinberg would have seen someone selling them in Long Beach.

I would let you know it if I found one. I think I would get the most out of it in the BST rather than the bay. Yes I would like the recognition but I'm just a simple man with no want to be famous.
Another way to look at it is the boxes that have been distributed so far are the last boxes that were rolled by CWI...........last in first out...when they pull them, they pull them off the top , not the bottom...........with the reports of these being found in mid Jan. by CWI it would lead you to believe that the key boxes, if there are any, would be dated 1/15/08 and earlier. The same thing happened with the GW"s, we hit the motherlode 5 weeks after there release............
SO why did the 'moral' people who found the error tell the Mint anyway ???
Maybe they don't know how much those would have been worth if they had let the error go into circulation, they could have kept a couple/few for themselves.
If there were 70k-140k released into circulation, they would not carry high premiums due to supply/demand. (Except for the initial excitement period on ebay).

Oh well. >>
I'm pretty sure that since 2000 or so, the Mint has threatened to revoke contracts from any outside vendor who doesn't return error coins to the Mint. Once upon a time the bigger dealers could buy the stuff that jammed counting machines or just looked unusual in bulk, but those days are long gone.

I guess it is pretty safe to say that the Mint did recover all of the monroe struck on quarter planchet errors. We are almost 6 weeks into the release of the Monroe dollars and no reports of any finds. This would have been a sweet error.
Yes, I'm a bit surprised that not a single specimen has been found/reported to the numismatic world.
I agree the Mint did a better-than-expected job of getting all (?) of them back from the wrapping facility, but I still have to believe that there are at least a few of them somewhere, waiting to be discovered in bricks/rolls.....

Just like the 69 s double die pennies. See how long it took to find those few.
Well, given the fact that none have surfaced, it looks like it will be quite a while before any do if at all.
I ordered a couple Monroe Dollar rolls from the mint back on 3/1 and these just finally shipped! Thats the longest I've ever had to wait for this stuff so they've probably been going through them to insure that none escape their clutches.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
How many will be minted this year? I don't think it will be all 300,000,000 but any fraction of that will be almost impossible to go through completely and many will be shipped to other countries that use these. If the errors get shipped there I would imagine almost a zero percent chance of these ever surfacing.
i think we'll find in the future someone FINALLY opens their rolls that they bought and makes the discovery. i know people who have been collecting new rolls for years of bank coins (new) and stored them for their grand kids. the grand kids will open them one day and maybe get lucky!

Or spend them because the rest of the dollar coins are worthless
I just happened to find this old thread in a search for something else... it's been almost exactly a year since the Mint attempted to recover these off-metal Monroe dollars, did any of them ever surface?

If I did work like the mint does work, I'd be out of business. They have just enough screw ups to make me wonder about the intellegence quota of employees, the managerial skills of supervisors and the protocol regarding production.
Considering the "wrapping companies" are being good boys and cherrypicking the coins they're assigned to wrap, why not hire these wrappers as government employees and put them to work in the shipping department at the mint ?
