Ok, now I gotta buy me a Dino-Lite...

First there was coinsarefun's thread.

Then there was poorguy's thread.

And most recently we have BECOKA's thread.

All 3 threads refer to Dino-Lites. Coinsarefun's thread refers to the 0.3 megapixel model 311, whereas the other two I believe refer to the 1.2 megapixel 411 model (there's 311/313 and 411/413, but I don't see any spec differences between the 11 and 13 of the same series).

Doing some scouring about the net I found this review posed last week. Check out the sample pictures from that review and the commentary that accompanies them. This thing really has some clarity and depth of focus... much better than any of the USB cameras that you add to a stereo miscroscope (I've tried a couple).

So I guess I gotta have one.

What's the cheapest price anyone has found on the 413?

The cheapest I've found thus far for the AM411T is $329 shipped from Mohawk Medical Mall (one of the recommended vendors on the manufacturer web site). The flex stand is $39 shipped as well.

EDIT: Here is a web page that compares shots of the same objects from the 311 and 411 models side by side.

Might as well get one to add to the arsenal. Maybe it can be on 7/24 as my DMPL cam or something too.

My wife called me to remind me to check them out and get one. I was at the show from opening to closing Friday and still forgot to stop by and see one. Amazing I can find my way home huh.

I stumbled on them at the show and resisted as I don't really have a need my DSLR can't handle (with the help of MgoodM3's reverseing adapter super macro). But it's a cool toy. also consider the celestron digital microscope that someone posted for $300. --Jerry

This is a good thread about a nice setup. I see that quite a few are being considered/ordered. The deal for $199 looks very inviteing. Where did you find this deal?
  • Mine too is on the way as we speak. I am wondering if Ill use my zoom scope anymore though?

  • I wonder how these on ebay compare. Same 1.3 meg, stand included for $76

Anyone buy one of these ?

    Looks interesting. My first reactions:

    1. Only has 4 LED lights instead of 8 as the Dino-Lites do.

    2. No indication of whether individual lights can be turned off or if it's an all-or-nothing proposition.

    3. Pictures do not seem as sharp as the ones that the AM411 provide.

Still, for less than $100 shipped it might be fun to try...
  • My Dino-Lite 311S was waiting for me when I got home so here's some pics I took ten minutes after opening the box, should get better with practice but still very easy to use.

Edit to add: deleted pics from photobucket so they're gone from here to.

I've decided I need one of those crazy Dino-Lites after seeing the awsome close-up shots. I've been working to try to get closer using my digital camera and I know some of your guys seem to be able to take incredible pictures with anything including a disposible camera, but still I struggle. This Dino-Lite seems to be the ticket or at least sounds like it might be. Post some Dino-Pics! image

Could you post a picture of the whole obverse or reverse of a silver dollar taken with your new Dino Lite?

Someone who is tired of flipping mint products ought to buy some cases of these and sell them on eBay to coin collectors . . . or on BST.

That's what I told the guy who was selling them at the L.B. show to do last week.

I wonder if a discount could be arranged for forum, CC, and/or ANA members!

  • Thanks for the information everyone. Great info.

I grew tired of the paralisis of analysis and decided to buy the $75 model from ebay. It was around 95 with shipping. 1.3 meg also. Price includes stand. Only has 4 led lights that can not be shut off. The lights won't bother me so much I don't think, I plan to disconnect or cover them and use my lighting for more natural coloring.

I decided to go cheap because I figure before long that their will be a 3mg model with more features. Less than a hundred on price makes for an ez upgrade. I purchased a $39 cyclops from toys r us that worked out great, it just doesn't have a usb camera. Sometimes you get great value for low price, I hope this camera will be one of them.

I'll post some photos after I receive the item.

The dino lite handheld digital microscope series is best explained here:

    Dino-Lites

You want the 400 series for the 1.3MP resolution
You don't need the measurement feature with coin photography
Ultraviolet LEDs are available on some models (not sure what affect that has on shooting coins)
The microtouch trigger is a nice feature.
Not sure, but the AM413TL working distance feature might be a plus when shooting coins.
Also be aware that the supplier does set a "minimum advertised price" for each product that resellers, under a signed agreement, cannot advertise below.
I can tell you that one of the suppliers LINKED in this thread is at that minimum advertised price (you ain't gonna find it advertised any cheaper).

I personally am undecided. My objective is the shooting the whole coin. There does seem to be some reflectivity issue with the LEDs (they can be turned off).

So, you dino-liters keep posting pics (along with your model number) and likes and dislikes with your particular model and hopefully we can narrow down the choices.

Will it take a picture of the entire slab?
If so, can someone please post a picture?

    Thanks.

  • Anybody else have your computer do an automatic update for the D-lite, only to have the program freeze and fail to open afterward?

I had to remove the whole shooting match and reload from disc. So far this thing hasn't wanted to auto-update again, thankfully...

At the show, they said no.
  • Besides the question as to whether the Dino-lite can take a picture of the whole slab (which I'm curious about, too), has anyone looked into the difference between the T and the TL models? The TL model indicates it has a "greater working distance," but I can't find much more info about what this means in application. Also, what happens between the 10-50x and 200x range? If anyone can give more details I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
