My mistake, my problem?? What would you do?

BRdudeBRdude Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭
Hi all. Here is the scenario. Don't misunderstand, I'm not upset, or mad, or really even worried about getting my money back. I know what I would do, what would you do??
I bought some "stuff" off the BST. In paying, my computer locked up when I was on paypal doing the payment and I had to reboot. I never hit the "send payment" tab. So when I log back in, I just resend the payment. Well, ends up I paid twice. It was only $38, but the total was $76 after paying it twice. I immediately came here and PM'd the seller, and he immediately "refunded" my money. Well, paypal is as good as it is bad, and it was going to take upwards of a week or 10 days to get my money back. No biggie, it's only $38, but $38 is $38, and it's mineimage
Well, ends up this seller had something happen to his account where there were several money exchanges that he didn't make (hijacked paypal??) and we have been in contact several times via PM's and like I said. I'm not really worried about getting the money back as this guy seems like a good eggimage and I have recieved the merchandise that I purchased no problem.
So, what would you do in my shoes?? just patiently wait?? Hound the guy with PM's every day wondering what the dealie is?? What would you do if you were the seller?? I know what I would do. If it was me, I would send the guy a refund check. Long before now. This transaction was on Jan. 27th. The fact that his paypal account got somehow screwed up is a bummer. But it has nothing to do with our transaction. What say you??
ps: I hope the seller doesn't get upset I am posting this, but let me reassure him that I wouldn't "out" him unless it went a month or so and he quit responding to my PM'simage which he hasn't done. He responds quickly and is appreciative of my patience.

  • My personal opinion, and thats all it is, is it sounds like the buyer has issues, he has lived up to his part right now, and I would give him more time. If your computer didn't screw up in the first place, it doesn't sound like you would have even been aware of him having issues with a highjacked account. JMO, but if you got what you paid for, I would give it a little more time and keep it between you guys....

Unless $38 is going to have a substantial impact on your finances, I'd wait however long it takes for PayPal to return your money. If I were to hound anyone, it would be PayPal. The seller performed - leave him alone. JMHO.

Patience is a good thing......be patient and everything will work out. Now, if the amount was $3800 instead of $38, I would expect the seller to refund my overpayment without delay.

Let cooler heads prevail. PayPal is the key. They can tell which computer the payments came from and normally catch double payments made by mistake.

Sit back, call PayPal and put them to work EARNING some of the Money they TAKE!

Good Luck, Kory. If you need some PayPal phone #s, let me know.

    Paypal sucks.

I had a sale going that showed as "pending" in eBay. Two weeks later, the very patient buyer asks whether or not I mailed the product.

So, I check PayPal's website and found that it was never pending, it went through two weeks ago. eBay's site had the wrong information.

A few apologies and a special trip to the post office and I hope the buyer is not too upset.

I'm not happy with PayPal nor eBay because of this incident. I find they put lots of holds on cash for various reasons. I suspect it is because the scammers can easily defraud PayPal in certain circumstances relating to payments, refunds and closed bank accounts. And because I will never understand the sorts of fraud they deal with from day to day, I tend to cut those companies some slack and remain patient with them. Goofing on the pending payment thing is new to me.

Yea, I read that thread also. I probably should have checked my tranactions before I sent the payment after I locked up. It would have probably showed, and I could have saved all this, but, Alas, hindsightimage anyway. Appreciate the replies and thoughts and willl patiently await something to happen as I am sure it will.
I did the same thing one time when I got a guys email address wrong. It took 2 weeks for paypal to put the money back in my account. Pypal is great when nothing is out of the ordinary, but if there is one thing just not quite right, they can be a pain to deal with.

  • if there is one thing paypal does very well, it is tie up funds. i doubt the guy is gonna hose you over $38 however, if hes reading this hes already wondering WTF ! so let it lay for a while, it is certainly NOT in his best interest to refund you with a check or money order. if you paid with paypal, let him refund you with paypal. if you insist otherwise, he will have no choice but to wonder what the hell YOU are up to. it was your goof in the first place, so just be patient with the guy, now after a few months, well, then it would certainly be logical to call him out. if paypal was paying interest on the money they "tie up" their personell would work MUCH harder at resolving the issues
  • I say wait patiently. He seems like he is having some issues and may need some time. Even though it wasnt a smooth purchase, He sounds like a good person to do buisness with.

I agree with the consensus. $38 isn't big enough to stress yourself over. Relax, let PayPal work it out. But after another 10 days, call PayPal and ask them what's going on if the $38 isn't back in your account.

  • Buyer and Seller:
Both buyer and seller have fully performed. Buyer received the merchandise, seller received payment. Contract is done.

    Buyer and Paypal:
Paypal appears to be having difficulty performing as agreed with Buyer in returning Buyer's second payment. Dispute is between Buyer and Paypal; Seller is out of the picture.

Just adding, I wouldn't hesitate to do business with the seller again at all. Like i said in the OP, He's a good egg in my book, and I hope he feels the same way about meimageimage This also won't affect me doing business on the BST forum. I've done scores of transactions, and never had a negative oneimage and don't figure this to be a negative one either. (only negative on paypal)

  • Even though it was your mistake... I would not have handled this as a "refund". I would have turned around and sent you back $39.44 ($38.00 after fees). Sounds like too much hassle for you and the BST seller over $1.44 in fees. I would have lost $1.44, but it would have been over in two minutes.

I wouldn't fret at all. As long as there is an open line of communication, it's a non-issue for me. If it continues to drag on, as the seller, I'd say that sending out payment by mail to make you happy and you can return that when it all clears through PayPal. PayPal can take a really long time to clear through. It's ugly.

But think of it from his point of view. If his PayPal account is locked, he might not really have received 2 payments, nor has he been able to refund the money completely, yet eh shipped out your coins.
  • I'd call paypal directly.

I agree. Also, paypal might hold the return and keep it as a credit instead of throwing it back into your bank account. That's the experience I've had with returns involving PP.
