To get the color yours were most likely shot at an angle so it will be harder to crop than a coin shot straight on. >>

Yeah...that's true too...Mark gave me some tips on that, for new pics, this last weekend. This is an older pic...haven't had a chance to take new pics.

still trying to find this "transfer mode -> overlay" bit.... >>

does this image help you out?

Not quite. If you don't have Elements then you have the full version and need to select the flipped image and change from transfer to overlay which I have not been able to find in elements.

This is all I can mange to do with Elements? image

    image
  • Lee, Becoka and I both are using Elements, you have to kind of play around with it, and I can't do that again for a few more hours today, but most of the info you need is in here, my last attempt at the top of this page and the last page are in elements 6.0, and spacemonkey has a note for me to try to get it finished after work today. Good luck!

Next step is to duplicate the layer you have. On the right hand side you should have a list of layers. Right click the coin and select duplicate.

The you need to flip it and drag it down to over lap the semi circles.
For this select the pointer on the top left and highlight the top coin layer, then go to Image, Rotate, Flip Layer Vertical.
To drag it you will have to go to Image, Transform, Free Transform. You can then drag that duplicated, flipped layer down to overlap the semi circles.

Finally you need to hide the excess coin to make it look like a reflection.
On the right hand side in the layers window drag the flipped layer above the semi circle layer.
The in the Layer Menu on top select group with previous

    That should be it.

Thanks guy's. image I have a border around the coin. When I place it in the overlay, the border goes out of the circle. How do you paste just the coin, no border in the circle? Sorry to be a pain.

  • << <i>Thanks guy's. image I have a border around the coin. When I place it in the overlay, the border goes out of the circle. How do you paste just the coin, no border in the circle? Sorry to be a pain. >>

only use the circles as a guide... once your placement is done you can turn that layer off or delete.

    hope that helps.

If you follow the first part of SM's instructions then you don't have to worry about the border. I would use the circle to copy each side of the coin into the template, resize them to match the circles and then merge them into one picture. Now there is no border.

To get to this point I just cut each image and pasted it where it needed to go. I roated the bottom images 180 degrees first then saved them. Looks like the only thing I need now is figure out how to make the bottom images as a reflection?

From my post to you above:

"Finally you need to hide the excess coin to make it look like a reflection.
On the right hand side in the layers window drag the flipped layer above the semi circle layer.
The in the Layer Menu on top select group with previous"
  • It also looks like you need to flip the bottom one more time also, so it is actually a mirrored image of the top, I am not sure if that is horizontal or vertical without doing it.

  • Thanks again SpaceMonkey!

  • OK, I am on elements 6.0, not mac, and haven't figured out this last step yet, here is try 3, different coin, it looks like this is what I need to do, but maybe someone can figure out another way to say it that will click:

  • these are looking pretty good... i would just work on the reflections... they are too intense and start to distract from the coin (the real star)

Should at any point I end up with more layers, i.e. layer 29 when I cut and move my coin over from my original image?

That is good, it did not even occur to me. This would make for some cool e-bay slab auctions. image
  • Spacemonkey, Can I use your template to post my auctions? Since I only sell modern slabbed coins, this would be very usseful. I would understand it though if you didnt want your work appearing everywhere unreferenced! I think the template is fantastic!

  • OK, I may never get this exactly right, but I did get the reflective image toned down, and I am pretty happy with this now, I will probably keep playing with it to see what I am missing (when I change to Overlay, the image disappears completely, but changing the same setting to different lighting option, gives this current look).

Maybe you will have to add a few mediocre BECOKA's. image

All three of the ones you mentioned seem to be interchangeable. I think Mark does the best on detail, Mike is pretty good at capturing the luster and the Phil does a little of both.

Finally!!!!! I think I added about 12 extra steps but it is done, Please give me thoughts. It is a good project and helps me learn more stuff in Elements.

This is the best I can do so far. Guess I need to read all the steps again because this does not look like reflections.

All looking good. I wonder what it is about finding the overlay that some people can find it and some can't.

I never found it and did something else that worked.
  • I do not have elements so unfortunately I can not offer any advice on that part... I just know in the regular Photoshop it is in the upper left drop down of the layers palette.

Same location in Elements 5.0 that I use, but setting those layers as "overlay" makes no difference in the picture. I'll figure it out. I'm just slow image

I used Elements 4.0 and included instructions way above. Not sure if anything changed from 4-5.
