  • welcome to eBay's new scammer types

  • And this is exactly why we need the feedback system to stay the same. If those sellers were not able to NEG him, you may have shipped the coin as soon as you received the check and lost your money. Ebay is opening it up to all sorts of scams now.

Quite the contrary! In order: I received & deposited the hot check, received positive feedback, waited till today (about 7 days) for the check to clear, it bounced, I left a big fat NEG, and then opened a UPI dispute!image That's the way it's supposed to work isn't it?image

    edited to add: "in order"

Ship a high dollar coin to a newb as soon as a check is received? I don't think so.

Anywhere you accept personal checks for payment there is a possibility the payment will not go through, eBay is no different.

You're stretching the truth because you have already decided you don't like the new feedback system. Name one seller who doesn't wait for the check to clear. --Jerry

You always file the NPB to get your fee's back. It's comments like this that make it clear many of you don't sell. That's fine but it confuses the matter when non-sellers decide to support the anti-establishment position and don't have the facts. Just an observation. --Jerry

I keep reading that as eBay Hot Chick Alert for some odd reason.

  • so how is your promptness rating going to do if you don't send the coin for 3 weeks because you want the check to clear?

  • << <i>so how is your promptness rating going to do if you don't send the coin for 3 weeks because you want the check to clear? >>

As long as you clearly state in your listing that you require 3 weeks for a check to clear before shipping a buyer his item, I would say it should not affect it at all.

Great optimism. Wish it was true. Just like I wish the rating for shipping cost would be perfect if you sell everything with FREE shipping. There are idiots out there who don't even bother to check how much they paid, when they paid, or what the terms were before thy choose their stars.

I've found guys who send checks to be very patient. It is the paypal croud that is starting to send messages at 2pm the next day asking if it has shipped yet. --Jerry

I heard eBay is thinking about using a popup of the auction terms when a buyer goes to leave feedback. This should help address what you are saying. Communication is also important, if you remind a buyer that it will take 3 weeks once you have received his payment before you can ship his item it will help as well.

Agreed. And Jerry is right about the saintly patience of most check payers.

  • Why would anyone ship a coin prior to waiting for the check to clear. I can understand customers who have multiple, multiple purchases perhaps, but a 1st time purchaser?image

  • Who on earth would ship a $700+ coin without the check clearing to a new ebayer? Shenananigans, something else is going on here, and it has nothing to do with bad checks.

I have had at least 3 ebay sellers ship as soon as I emailed them their check was in the mail.
That was confirmed by the rapid delivery time.
AIR they were all 3 $100 or less. Whatever I thought it was pretty trusting of them,
Could have been my 400+100% feedback? So some sellers will do that.

I've done that on less expensive items & when the buyer has a proven track record. It's not that uncomon a practice..

No different from on approval sales of the past. There is a margin of trust among some of us, but not a foolishly broad margin.

  • I'm wondering if the people who left the pos feedback just shipped and left the pos before before the check cleared. Even if only one out of ten sellers do this he stands to make out big time. What a slimeball!

I had an occasional seller ship me a $400 coin

when I told him I put a cashier's check in the mail

I got the coin 2 days after I sent the check

The benefits of the new feedback system far outweigh the few negatives like this.

There are many ways as a seller to protect yourself from fraud like this.

The real problem with the new feedback system is it generally negatively effects the smaller, less sophisticated seller that is not using ebay as their full-time store front. In effect this new system may push out more of the sellers that ebay was designed for.

I buy very little on ebay anymore since it is turning into just another store-front for professional sellers. I may as well buy from Amazon (obviously not for coins though - yet?).

That's why I'm letting you guys, and gals, know about him. I got a message from another one of his victims this morning. Add another NEG to the count! It appears he's buying some high priced items using a closed bank account. I'm pretty sure at least one seller got burned by premature shipping! Makes me wonder about the rest of them!

This guy seemed ok in the beginning. Alot of communication, very fast payment, then he started "pushing it". You know: "did you receive my check?, has it cleared?, has it cleared yet?, have you shipped yet?" I've learned enough right here on this forum, thank you very much, how to not get burned by scum like this! I just hope someone else learns it as well!

4.9 is fine. I'm at 4.7 charging reasonable shipping. I need to get to 4.8 so I'm going to free on a lot of things and about half my cost on others. On PCGS empty blue boxes where shipping is up to 50% the cost of the item I think I'm going to use the automatic postage calculator and charge my exact cost to the penny and see if that makes buyers happy. --Jerry
  • how do i tell what mine are? I know i have 12 feedbacks so far, but what about all the other stuff?
  • You have to get 10 feedbacks that rate you on the 4 areas before they show up.

  • Did he send it UPS next day with a return envelope? I had a guy do this from LA a few weeks ago. Sent a totally bogus Etrade check. It takes longer for no account or closed account checks to return.

    how did it bounce?

was it a NSF or a closed account?

closed accounts you should contact the local police/county sheriff's

as they surely broke some laws - you even know where they are (unless PO Box)

Doesn't matter if the check cleared the bank can still hold you responsible if it is a bad check.
