The Coin Depot in coinworld... trust/no trust?

ChrisRxChrisRx Posts: 5,619 ✭✭✭✭
They have a raw 1803/2 Capped bust $5 that looks very nice....

Anyone deal with them?

Edited to add: It looks like an EF to me (which if it was, I would still be happy) But what would make me unhappy if it came back as whizzed/cleaned/etc.

It appears that RYK, and experienced collector of early gold, does not recommend purchase of that coin (I think). image

Darn! That coin looks good too, and a good price... Ah well, you're probably right, somethins gotta be wrong with it.

Reading between the lines of RYK's post, I think you should pass. Seriously, you have yo ask yourself, why would they try to sell a coin like that raw? Maybe, just maybe it might be BB'd....

I'd rather own the Brillo pad that passed across this one. It's prolly got almost as much gold on it.image

  • Does it seem that the ads in CoinWorld and Numismatic News are making 'headlines' here recently? Perhaps we should just make a blanket statement (and make a list of those) to NOT buy from in the publications. OR would it be easier to make a list of those who it is SAFE to buy from (this list would be much smaller and easier to come up with)?

Without looking at the coin, why would I think that a raw early gold coin from a Coin World Two page Spread Sellerâ„¢ be a good opportunity?

  • I'd say pass on it too, but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask if it's got any problems.
  • Wow, there seems to be a happier smile on Liberty on the Coin Depot's than on RYK's (RYK, this is NOT a knock on your coin, merely sarcasm towards Coin Depot's.....yours IS nicer...as a matter of fact, yours is a gorgeous example anyone would be proud to own!!!). I think the smile is happier because Coin Depot knows how much of a slamming the buyer of their coin will take...once they sell that coin, smiles for everyone at Coin Depot!!!

BUT, I wouldnt go to the store to buy it, as it may not be there. Look at their terms...'walk-ins welcome, but please call ahead as most coins kept in bank vault'........that must mean that all their good stuff that ISNT in their ads are at the store and the cleaned/whizzed/altered/problem crapola is in a safety deposit box. It must be nice to be able to have a SDB labeled 'junk gold' or 'junk silver'. You get a phone call, go to the bank, go to the 'junk pile', and pull out a coin they will get $6,250 for....niiiiiiiiiiice.

Why don't you call them and ask them why a $6,500 rare coin is not in a slab? I'd love to hear the answer. image

    "walk-ins welcome"

Too bad they are in SC, and I am in CA.

I've had just once experience with them, several years ago on a rare, raw VAM advertised in Coin World that I figured had problems but called about anyway and asked a pointed question: "Has it been cleaned?" They said it had not. I then asked, "Are you sure? Because I don't want to waste your time or my postage." They said they were sure.

When the coin showed up, it sure had been cleaned. In fact, a seeing eye dog probably would have noticed it.

I've never even remotely considered doing business with them since then, and I'm committed to keeping that streak alive as long as I am.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Newsman.....I agree 1,000% with you. These people are in the business, they should know that a coin will fetch more $$ slabbed than it will without plastic wrapped around it, thats the way it is, and we all know it. However, if it were in a slab, that coin would never be in an ad in CW or NN....it would have traded off or been sold to someone else that would be looking to take advantage of the plastic and get all they could for it....and according to CU price guide, this coin in AU is about a $10,000 coin (no clue on this series, so the $$ could be off, but I think my point is understood here). Also, if its AU, with a 'Bold Strike', why are they only trying to get XF $$ for it? Boy, I'll bet they cant WAIT to unload that coin.....

Yeah, that's the point. It's always funny to watch worms squirm and hear the excuses they make up when they get caught trying to cheat someone. I had a dealer once tell me that "people pay more for raw coins" because -- as he put it -- the TPGs were just a racket designed to cheat collectors. Of course his table was loaded end-to-end with cleaned, overgraded, overpriced junk. image

On occasions -- with a top auction firm selling off a known and respected "old time collection" -- raw coins actually can sometimes get more because some people may overestimate what the grade would be when slabbed. Of course, those are the exceptions which prove the rule.

I'd like to see the rock tumbler that was used to "clean" that coin.
