O Pee Chee Baseball

Just out of curiosity - how many board members collect OPC? I've been collecting them more than Topps for the past year, and I'm really enjoying them. I collect mainly early 80's and late 70's baseball and I love the smaller sets that OPC released during those years. Especially if you're looking to build a Set Registry set - the OPC sets are a little less time and $$ consuming. In particular, I've been looking to start '79 & '84 OPC graded sets. Having the Ozzie & Mattingly rookie cards as the cornerstones of those sets has sweetened the idea a bit too.

Any thoughts or any collectors with shared interest out there?

  • I collect the RC's of HOF players. I am tring to add it as a Registry Set, but they have it on their long list. I have the following:
    1972 FISK
    1973 SCHMIDT
    1973 GOSSAGE
    1975 BRETT
    1975 YOUNT
    1976 ECKERSLEY
    1978 MURRAY
    1979 SMITH
    1983 GWYNN
    1983 SANDBERG

I ma eagerly pursuing Palmer and morgan...
  • I collect nothing but OPC baseball now after years of trying to collect everything. I sold off everything else and went back to collecting what I collected as a kid. Very very very challenging to find cards that are nicely centered, which is always fun at shows.
Got out of the graded stuff just because of the price and logistics of cross-border grading. Right now, I'm collecting the 1994 OPC set which is a lot of fun, and something I never did when they first came out. The set is 270 so its managable... but it's also a good looking set and challenging due to bleed borders with centering problems.

I'm collecting a raw 1979 set, and when that gets closer to completion, I'll take on one of the other late 70s set.

I am collecting the 1979 OPC Baseball set as well. They have been a challenge to find in PSA 9 or better. I have some duplicate PSA 9s if you are interested.

I collect a few older stars and also I'm working on a 72 pirates team set. Can't afford to try to collect a whole set. I love the bright colors and rough edges on the OPC cards!

i love the older opc baseball sets...i usually collect the older stars and trying to find them in nice shape and centered is really tuff....i think down the road these sets are really going to take off...i will tell you what i have been trying to finish this 1965 and 1973 opc baseball set for a while and it is a challenge..i still have a nice order that i am waiting to get back from psa with 1982-1985 opc baseball stars...these sets are fun...terryimage

Im doing raw sets from 77-93. I do have a couple of graded 1980 that I'll check on when I return home and possibly post a couple of them up for sale.

Thanks everyone for their input. And yes - I totally agree - the challenge of finding some of the older sets in good shape is part of the fun. For instance there are like 190 PSA 10 Mattingly Topps rookie's at this point, but only 3 OPC PSA 10's. To me - this is a card that's going to take off once he's a Hall of Famer. I actually love the way the well centered cards look with the jagged edges and I've come to learn that PSA is not too harsh on the OPC edges since you're hard pressed to find four straight edges on any one card.

Actually, I'm collecting the set in lower grade raw.

Amazingly, I am having a hard time finding someone with low grade stuff compared to graded stuff.

    Anyone have any?
