  • Smitty,

The corners looked "clipped," not naturally rounded. Any teenie tiny little bit of faith that I had of this card being real just disappeared!

Ok, I'm sure many people here (including me) are very sympathetic for you losing a child. My son was just born in May and I couldn't imagine. But to wish that on someone else? C'mon man. And I'm sorry to be blunt here, but maybe it isn't the best idea for a non-collector to be hanging around here so much. If you won't admit that the Ruth is not genuine fine, go convince your friends and be the big man around town (that sure seems like what you're trying to be around here, and nobody really cares what you have anyway if you're gonna brag about it like a 4th grader). We're collectors here and prefer to deal in reality with people who know a little about the hobby.

  • Thanks I appreciate the input. Im not an expert thats why I came here. It looked real to me and didnt say reprint so I thought I should get it checked out. I also have a greenbay packers 1964 Eastern Western Team signed and coaches football that I need to have checked out. I understand that in 1964 if you bought a new Mustang. Ford would give you a stamped Green Bay Packers the DUKE football all signatures were stamped in the same ink. Mine are different inks and they are fadding. The stamped ball signatures are not supposed to fade as easy. Any help would be great full. I was told the stamped ball is worth 2500 to 4500. A game used, signed, football, which is what I was told mine was when I bought it 15 years ago is around 25,000 Ill get pics uploaded Fri. night. Thanks

A counterfeit hundred dollar bill is not going to say "counterfeit" on it either. You came to this board to ask the experts and we all gave you the same opinion. You obviously won't accept that.
  • OMG!!! With all the spin-off threads I've seen on this now (of which most were hilarious) I say we all just leave this alone and maybe it will go away. I'm starting..............now.

    Agreed.

BTW, still waiting on the response about the Ripken Charlotte card I posted. That card has sold for around $900 several times over the past year. It has to be legit, right?

The problem with this smitty guy is that he is sooo subjective. He thinks and believes the card to be real he does not even have room for reason. Unless you are a vintage card collector or have researched about cards of that era, you are not going to know what to look for when determining if its authentic or not no matter how many times you say its REAL. Why he so adamantly challenges the vintage collectors on here instead of just sitting back and open himself up to learn something is beyond me.

Also, smitty's credibility went down because of his contradictory statements of which others already pointed out. He said he bought reprints off ebay, but before stated he found the REAL Ruth card with other reprints in the dumpster.

I am sure you fellow collectors would agree that anyone is welcome here that has a sincere question about a card. Often times, people from the Coin Forum come on here to ask about some cards. They come, ask politely, they get a response, and then we all move on. This Smitty guy comes on here like a bat out of hell boasting about a card he found in the dumpster. Then, he swears it is real while also claiming to not be an expert. Chill dude. Scan the card of your choice and sit back and let the experts here handle it.

Now that the Ruth card is a moot point in terms of authenticity, I am curious to know how much the SMR is for a PSA 1 of this 1914 Ruth card?????

Ok so are you John Cobb or Ray Edwards? All you need to do is claim we are saying your card is fake because you are black. Also refuse to get it graded, but allow paper analysis to prove it. GTFOH

Its a dead issue. I cannot believe this thread went on for so long. OK, the entertainment value was worth it.

Missed this post the 1st time around.
Now I know what everyone meant when they asked "did you find that in the dumpster too"

The card (green scan above)..... is a very common reprint of the M101-4/5 set. The easiest way to tell at a quick glance on any card from the set is to look at the gap between the photo and the thin black line around the photo. On the reprint the gap is about 4-5X too wide and easliy seen. The authentic cards have a very narrow gap. On the reprin they cropped the photo part of the card then added a new white border and then tried to reproduce the origianl black line. Because the photo was cropped the line is now much farther from the photo now. Just incase anyone want s to know image Happy collecting.

The 5 Most highly reprinted sets in the pre1930 category (being unknowingly auctioned as authentic).

    F52 (aka Fro-Joy)
    E-Unc. Geo. Ruth Candy Co.
    E145-2 (aka 1915 Cracker Jack)
    T206
M101-4/5 (aka Sporting News etc. Most are the blank backed ones)
  • Smitty -

Is your name Tom Murry aka Tom Murray

and are you located in PA?

Just wondering because your story sounds just like the stories this guy comes up with.

Wow, this thread dug up again.

Why Smitty does not show up is beyond me. We know it was fake and told him so. The scans said it all. Perhaps Smitty is not into baseball cards and has no reason to talk to us. Oh well.

He hasn't showed up because it was real and he sold it for $2.3M. Now he's on an island looking at his yacht, drinking drinks with little umbrella's in them being fanned by tan topless native girls. YEE of little faith. I told you all to jump on that. Damn the luck. image
