Durability of silver: Pocket piece after a year (pics)

Some time in the fall of 2006 I decided to start carrying a pocket piece on a regular basis.

Like many of us, I picked a silver eagle. This was a generic unc, no marks, no wear.

My goal was not to wear the coin down, it was just to have it on me. What wear it received I wanted to be gradual. So I decided to have it in the small bonus pocket (key, condom, whatever you want to call it) above the main pocket on the right hand side of my jeans. All of my jeans have this extra pocket, most of my shorts and most of my pants, too. So it's on me better than 80% of the time, maybe as much as 90%, year round.

I also keep it there by itself. It doesn't come into contact with any other objects, coins or otherwise.

I'm amazed at how well it's holding up. I had no idea that silver could be this durable. Grade it? XF+? Maybe AU?

I don't think it gets much "circulation" in that extra pocket. It's kind of protected in there and isn't getting banged up like it normally would with other change, keys, etc.

  • do you carry anything else in your pocket? If you carry a bunch of other change with you it will wear it down much faster.

I guess it started with the milk spots?

There are no milk spots on this coin. Just a play of light.

You should not be surprised that the coin has gotten very little wear. Carrying it in your jeans like that is similar to a cloth lined coin envelope. If you really want to see how silver wears, carry it around in your pocket change. Then you will see some results.
