Holy crap! I bid more than double market value and still get blown out! WAY out!
So, Parke consigns his Numero Uno proof Kennedy set to the Heritage FUN sales. Now, I only collect the early years, (1964-1970), aka the really pricey stuff in pop top. I didn't win the Lotto, so his 1964 69DCAM, 1965 SMS 67DCAM, 1966 SMS 68DCAM, 1967 SMS 68DCAM, and his 1968-S 70DCAM were only a wet dream. I already have the Accented Hair in the same grade, and my 1970-S is a better example than his. That left the 1969-S 69DCAM as the only coin I had a prayer of acquiring.
Market value for a 1969-S in PR69DCAM is about $150, and they actually regularly sell for that and sometimes less. I also already have a nice example. However, Parke's coin is an absolute MOOSE with devices that are super nova white and mirrors that are black holes. I've seen only one other that is as strong, and it's in a PR67DCAM holder. So, obviously, there was no way it was going to go cheap.
I put in a bid of $310, which is $356.50 with the juice. I figured at more than double market value I had a shot. NOPE! That sucker sold for $632.50!!!!!
Oh, and it didn't have a sticker.

I knew it would happen.
<< <i>I hate to say it, but I had a blast white MOOSE sell on E-Bay for less than $200 about a month ago. >>
I saw it. Parke's coin blows it away.

EDITED TO ADD: I would have more faith in that than the "other" sticker.

If it had a sticker it would have sold for 10-50% more.

But a MOOSE can be priceless!...especially if you plan to keep it forever and pull it out once in a while to taunt people.
I bet you will eventually find a raw one hidden in a proof set someday.

don't get too upset, russ. that coin you lost probably will develop milk spots in the future.

<< <i>Uhh whad da hecks a Moose? >>
A coin that stands head and shoulders above others in the same grade. In the case of proofs, it is one where the frost is the ultimate in thickness and whiteness and the mirrors the ultimate in depth. Basically, a coin that looks like a presentation medal.
Example of a moose:

Hey Russ, The next time your in Maine look me up, I'll show you a real Moose. Up close & personal

I actually wrote Lameness Translator 2.0, what he was trying to say is.
The media suggest that a democrat will be elected to the White House in Nov. Kennedy was a Democrat. Thus Democrats are in high demand this year. To those of us who understand lameness (because we are lame) that was pretty funny!!!!
<< <i>Basically you wussied out and the winner stepped up to the plate, he wanted it more than you, and nothing else needs to be said. >>
Spoken like the clueless one you are. At more than four times market value, the buyer will die with the coin and never see his money back. There are 468 of these graded at this level. Another of this caliber will some along eventually.

Nope.

You know, idiot, you're exactly the type of buyer that dealers love to bend over and stick it to. Every coin has an upper limit in value, and only a clueless newb, (you, for example), writes a blank check.

It cost me $7 plus the grading fee. Now, if the point of that is beyond the comprehension ability of your pea brain, it is this: For these coins it is not necessary to spend ridiculous sums of money. It is, however, necessary to excercise patience rather than rush headlong to a purchase while tripping over your open checkbook.

Moose Coin
Since you own a super example of the 69, why did you want the one in the heritage auction? Is it a slight upgrade in technical grade? Or do you just want another example?
<< <i>Oh, and BTW, nitwit, I already own this one:

Yes but how many $7 sets did you buy until this one showed up?

Numeric upgrade. Mine is a 67DCAM due to some hairlines in the upper left obverse field.

Since I only buy these sets sight-seen at shops and shows, not very many.

The PQ, high end, Monster, Moose, (etc., etc.) specimen of a particular coin that can be found by everyday collectors makes the effort worthwhile. The thrill of the hunt, the feeling you get when finding such a coin, the acquisition of such a coin for a very modest price, the pride of owning a coin of such quality that few other collectors will ever have a chance to own, the prospect of receiving a profit on the resale of the coin and through ones efforts separating such a great coin from the dross so that it will be available to future collectors combine to make an overall positive experience. An experience similar, I expect, to the experiences of past collectors (i.e. Pittman) who devoted time and effort to finding and acquiring modest cost, high quality coins of the day.

I can not say which type of collector gets more enjoyment out of the hobby (though I know which way works for me). Each should collect in whatever manner makes sense to them and they should not concern themselves (or complain) about others who do not collect "the right way" (aka their way). They should also educate themselves as much as possible about the hobby and be prepared to accept full and sole responsibilty (without blaming others and claiming "victim" status) for any loss they suffer on the resale of the coins they purchase.
