Cracking open slabs

I recently cracked out two gold coins in PCGS slabs and sent them back as raw coins.
Has anyone here had any good luck doing this?

    I don't crack them. I simply send them in for regrade when I have something I think will grade higher. You are safer by doing it that way. Your coins will always come back graded and there is no risk of not getting the coin back into a holder. My last go around netted me four out of five upgrades. My previous time was five for five.

    I average about 60% upgrades doing it. I probably crack less than 5% of my slabs for resubmissions. As an interesting aside, I cracked five PCGS coins once and sent them back in to PCGS... three upgraded and two downgraded. It's a numbers game. You win some, you lose some. Winning more than losing helps, though. image

    I sent my first two in raw, but have another one on hold that I may just leave in, so I can guarantee the grade atleast stays put.
    It's in an old green holder PCGS, and looks alot cleaner than ones of the same grade in newer holders, I hope to atleast get one grade up...
    BTW, it's a 1904 Double Eagle in 63, from 62 to 64 the price really jumps, so getting back a 62 would not be cool, although I doubt it would be downgraded.

    @Insider2 To be honest, I haven't cracked any in a while, but the last two, from NGC to here, I got the exact same grades (which was fine to me) I like the new PCGS holders better than the new NGC anyway...

    @Wabbit2313 I remember the 1904 $20, I suffered a downgrade :'( I bought an OGH 63 that now, looking back was puttied. I didn't know about that back then in 2008, I bought the coin and didn't know what the residue was. I acetoned it and sent raw. 63 to 62. :s The other coin, if memory serves me correctly, was a 61 that went 62. ($10 Lib)

    Yes, I've had great luck. Luck greatly increases with a good eye.

    That is because it really does work quite well.

    For reals, that last one I tried a Dremel with a cut off wheel, which worked but made a complete mess and smelled of melting plastic. Back to the HAMMER! :)>:)

    Not being hung up on the slab number myself I have not participated in this effort, but I would agree with a previous statement that I would submit for a reevaluation (probably not an option 10-years ago) or a cross-over. I have actually seen nice early copper damaged by the owner cracking it out (I would think the hammer approach not very subtle).

    I recently viewed an apparent nice early copper cracked out of the TPG holder, only to have the "coin" determined to be counterfeit, and the TPG guarantee became void.

    I have heard of a few who have made a living "cherry picking" coins and having them upgrade.

    I got a Hammer.

    I got a New Slab in.

    Reasons for smacking the Slab with Thor's Hammer ..... Possible upgrade, Wrong Plastic, Incorrect Error Description, Going to the LB plastic factory later in the week.
