Another seller to avoid on eBay

I was (keyword was) interested in THIS MANNY RAMIREZ CARD.

I e-mailed the seller and said, "Dear vintagesnowmobiles, I'm interested in this card, but i didnt want to submit an offer for what this card is actually worth and have you feel insulted... Do you know that this is worth a fraction of your asking price? The only two 94 SP DC Holo's worth this much in a PSA 10 are Jordan and A-Rod. Are you willing to come down significantly in your price?"

So my logic on this is clearly stated... I didnt want to offer like $175.00 - $200.00 and have him feel insulted, so I figured I'd ask if he knew what this was really worth....

His response...

"HI, THIS CARD HAS NO PRICE GUIDE IN THIS CONDITION. THERE ARE ONLY 6 PSA 10'S OF THIS CARD IN EXISTANCE, ONLY 6!!! SOMEONE BUILDING A REGISTRY SET OF THESE HAS TO PAY TO GET THIS, THERE ISNT ANOTHER ONE AVAILABLE THAT I HAVE SEEN. MAKE YOUR OFFER ON EBAY, AND IF YOU ARENT IN THE BALLBARK IT WILL REJECT YOU. THERE IS A HUGE, HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RAW ONE OF THESE, AND ONE IN A PSA 10 HOLDER. IF YOU WANT A CHEAP ONE IT WONT BE IN A PSA 10 HOLDER I ASSURE YOU"

Then he took the time, not even one minute later, so send a second e-mail to me, which said:

"AND YOUR COMMENT ON THE PSA 10 JORDAN AND AROD ARE SILLY. A PSA 9 AROD IS WORTH 2,000++ I WILL PAY YOU $3,000 RIGHT NOW IF YOU HAVE A PSA 10 AROD FOR SALE, GIVE ME A BREAK. I WASNT BORN YESTERDAY"

IMO, there's no need for him to be rude to me. I'm simply an interested customer trying to do a little wheeling and dealing.

The sellers name is vintagesnowmobiles.

Anyone else have someone be this rude to you regarding an eBay offer?

Just make your offer - why are you worried about hurt feelings - he is a business man - if he likes the offer he will take it if not he will tell you no...

Not the same seller but I've had this same type of statement thrown back at me when I've sent people what I consider fair offers.

Is your value of the card based on SMR or previous Ebay sales of this card??
  • Considering the population report, he may not be wrong, even if he could've come across better in your opinion. I've seen some crazy sales here recently on lower population cards recently. In addition, even though you were being nice to him, it is hard as a seller. I just listed a lot of items and have been flooded with question after question asking if I'll pull the auction early or sell BIN.

Just because you want to pay a certain price for a card doesnt mean that is what it is "worth".

It might only be worth $175 to you but if someone needs that card for an all psa 10 holoview die-cut set and none have been available for months.. $399 might be the steal of the century to them.

I get e-mails sometimes from buyers that try to tell me what my cards are worth and it makes me laugh. A more reasonable e-mail from you would go something like this In my opinion.

    Hi,
I was looking at one of your auctions. Your buy it now price is $399, I would like to add this card to my collection but the price is more than I want to pay. Instead of sending you an offer through ebay I thought I would drop you an e-mail first and ask you what would be your best price on this card to see if we were in the same ballpark. I was thinking around $175.00. Any shot we can work something out?
    Sincerely,
    you.

Once you start telling people what you think their cards are worth, it is probably a huge turnoff and they don't take you seriously or they get offended.

  • He asks crazy-stupid prices on 1993 refractors graded too.

Nice guy, but a stupid business model.
  • I do not think he was that rude to you. Alls caps is annoying, but I see no name calling or the like. in fact, you have him in a defensive situation telling him "Do you know that this is worth a fraction of your asking price?" and he is saying why he thinks it is.

He did note to make your offer on eBay....so it doesn't sound like he is trying to buck the system or the like, nor did he tell you were to go.

Personally, I would not pay $50 for it (ok, I would to resale it) but not if I had to keep it. I do know the same cards in football are very hard to get 10's in, and there appears to be more demand for the baseball versions, so is it worth $400 perhaps, perhaps not. I guess if it sales, it is. But I don't see a case like a 2000 Topps PSA 10 that he is asking $200 for.

  • I have had my eye on three Puckett cards he has and he has asked the same 20X SMR for over a year and a half. It only takes one idiot to buy and he makes out ok, but I have to think he takes it on the shorts in listing fees in the end.

I've offered 2X more than reasonable and he still won't budge so I don't think he really wants to sell any of it...but that's just my guess.

In the end I find the same card at 1/10 the price somewhere else....just takes 6 months longer to find.

  • I've paid ten times less for cards that are older, and even more scarce.

This guy is basing his ridiculous price on the fact that Jordan and ARod are selling for sick money..... but those are rookies.

He's listed this card numerous times.

He's wasting his time and others.

I think the seller is just waiting for that ONE person willing to pay his price. Not wasting time. This thread is a waste of time though. Grow thicker skin. People are so f'ing soft now days.

Ive bought from him 4-5x before with no issues at all. Regardless of his business model, make your offer...he will accept or reject. But have confidence that if he accepts then you will get your card in a timely manner.

Who needs to get thicker skin? I'm not offended or anything...

Just thought I'd share this guys rudeness with my fellow collectors.

    rudeness with my fellow collectors.

I don't think the seller is being that rude. Maybe not as friendly as some of us would like but not really "rude." Certainly not "rude" enough to start a thread over. My telling you to grow thicker skin may be rude but I don't think that seller is so rude.
  • Fair enough. I respect your opinion.

  • Why don't you just buy another card like it for "what it's actually worth" ? And if there's no guide, why is it worth what you say? And if there's no others like it for sale... then it has to be worth what he says. image

I've dealt with him also, no problems.

Gotta keep in mind that it just costs a dime per month to list this card, so if he eventually sells it for, say, $50 more than what it should go for, he's profiting nicely in the end.

The bigger issue that I would have is him charging $6 for First Class mail . . . ermm? Priority is $4.60 and you get the box for free. Maybe he just figures his shipping profits make up for the 2 years x .10 for his card to sit in his Ebay store.

I say just make an offer. I get offers all the time that may be way off base, but it opens the lines of communication. Sometimes I actually end up with a decent offer and a sale is made.

    Just my two cents!

    Bob...
  • I hate it when people write me and ask if I will accept an offer, when I have a best offer option available. It is probably up there with the most annoying things a buyer can do I think. Well that and tell me what my cards are worth.

Anyways good luck with your quest for one of these cards.
  • Here's a case in point. Awhile back I bought a 2007 Topps card of Peyton Manning that included a piece of football from the Super Bowl. The card was numbered out of 10. Fortunately for me, the card was offered in an ebay store and I found it, made an offer, and won the card. I was thrilled. Considering the price I paid for it, I decided to go for the complete 6 card set.

Not long after the Adam Vinatieri came for auction and sold for a solid amount more than the Manning. I lost the auction and was surprised at the bidding. Next comes the card of Dominic Rhodes. I accept the value is in the game used football piece and not the player. However, considering that Dominic left the Colts I figured the $399.99 BIN was a complete joke. After all, how is the card of Dominic going to sell for over $100 more than the Vinatieri and nearly twice of what the Manning sold for? I sent an offer and it was declined. A few hours later, someone pulled the trigger on the $399.99 BIN.
  • Do you know that this is worth a fraction of your asking price?

That statement in the original email is the one that set the tone for the whole exchange. It almost sounds like you are nicely calling him a dumbass.

    Only the tens

when you told him that his card was worth only a fraction of its true value is where you were wrong (IMO) Even if you are correct it is not something a seller wants to hear. Maybe to him it is worth that amount. maybe he has 80% of jis asking price into the card. My point is simply that is his price, either buy it or make an offer.

Over on the net 54 board a thread was started where an ebay seller is asking 50k for a card that is basically worth 2k. He had no idea of its value and tried for a big score and even went as far as to compare it with the T206 wagner.

Why people do the things they do is beyond me.

Had you politely just made your offer and left out what you feel the card is worth you may have gotten a different answer.

Don't worry about those that tell you to stop spamming the boards with topics like these either, post whatever strikes your fancy.

    Steve

    Good for you.

IMO - the thread title should be corrected - you had an isolated email incident with him that was provoked by you - I agree with WP - and now we are reading this thread?

  • At least this isn't one of those douches that started their own "grading" company like Graded Rookies Authenticated, and prints stickers to put on a screw down holder that contains an obvious poor-fair card and he gives it a 10. It was a little rude I guess, but you were expecting him to be upset at the offer anyway. I wouldn't black list the guy for high prices, he can try and get whatever he wants. At least he's not a scammer.
