Which do you prefer and why - part 3

I already did sell my Gobrecht dollars. If I had kept a souvenier, which would you have kept and why?

The Eliasberg J-58 Fantasy Piece [PCGS PR65]. Extremely light hairlines under light toning:

The Legend J-60a [PCGS PR65]. One of the nicest Gobrecht dollars I've ever seen. Technically and aesthetically almost perfect:

The Amon Carter 1838 [PCGS PR64]. Stunning toning, an eye catching cameo eagle, with just enough lines to limit the grade:

WOW, this for me is one tough call.

The first has an excellent pedigree and grade, but is weak on the color
The second has better color and an excellent strike plus a great grade
The third has a great strike and the color makes you do flips, but the grade holds it back.

My final choice would be the first one. It looks the most original next to the Legend J-60 and I like puplish brown toning

The Eliasberg because it seems the closest to original. Cheers, RickO

The 1838, and once again, do you have to ask why???imageimage

    The middle coin.

The gentle hues simply grab me.

All three coins are awesome...but not perfect. Each has its own minor problems. I would choose the Eliasberg because of it's originality, nice toning, pedigree and overall look.

But TDN, what would you choose? And what coins would you (or did you) choose from your other threads? And why?

I'd pick the middle one - the coloring is the most pleasing

I guess I'd take the middle coin, with the first coin as my 2nd choice. I just don't care for the toning on the 3rd piece.

    Middle- I like the toning
If I was to keep it it would have to be eye appealing to me

For a 'type' set (I know...most type sets don't have gobrechts...) i'd go for the middle coin, it looks almost perfect.

However, if i were to be able to have any of the three i'd take the first one...I love the J-58.

I'd have to settle for #2.......imageimage

I forgot to say why. The toning on #2 is more pleasing than the other two to me. The reverse on the 3rd looks unnatural or caused because of a case of poor storage, the mottled toning is not pleasing to my eye. I don't like the dark toning on the left obverse of #1, looks like too many people handled it poorly. So #2 wins.image

    The J-60a

While the toning on the 3rd is spectacular, the stars on the reverse of the J-60a mixed with the toning make the eagle look like it is galactic. image

This one is just more pleasing to me.

Now, when did you sell these? I thought they would be a permanent part of your collection?

I would go with the top one, not because of grade, not because of the pedigree, but because I love how Gobrecht had the "nerve" to put his name in such a prominent possition in the design. One has to love the audacity!!!

Number 2, the strike is just awesome; the other two look flat in comparison.
