Coin collectors: 2007 year in review.....

Did you establish a "goal" last January for your collection? How did you do? I have less coins now than anytime since I have called myself a collector. I think becoming more "picky" is the main reason. I gave up on my Buffalo set I was working on for a couple of years because I was going cross-eyed looking at so many with problems!!!(But it is in VERY good hands with another forum member! image )...and now I am trying to find Morgan Dollars that fit with my "own expectations...it has not been an easy task so far! I set the goal to learn more and buy coins using the knowledge that I gain from this board and many good sources. I think I did ok...the coins I have I love...I just hope that I can find the "better stuff" next year.

I am also going to try to re-open my mind to different series....yes Wes...maybe even Capped Bust Halves! image

I do not set goals... just go where the muse directs me... more fun (IMO) that way. Cheers, RickO

I went into 2007 not really having list of, or 1 for that matter, goals. My progressive goal as the year went by was to thin out the accumulated junk I had amassed in my earlier collecting days and narrow my focus to a couple of series'. Since being on the boards for a little over a year now I, like many, have become more picky in my collecting habits.

I guess my goals for 2008 would have to be learning more details of each series that I am serious about (and try to get Shawn to buy some Capped Bust Halves) image Another goal will be to attend a coin show some how, some way, somewhere!

I went into 2007 wanting to complete my 1853 circulated year set (sans gold) and was lucky enough to be able to do so. 2008 will be spent looking for some upgrades and maybe some of the gold.

My goals this year varied. I wanted to play a game with myself to see how an initial $50 could grow into some large $$$ amount. Well, I started off good by making that initial $50 into $95, that $95 into $200, and that $200 into $350. Yeh, yeh, yeh, cherrypicking was the name of the game. Well, after I hit that $350 I slowed down because of other priorities and I cherrypicked an 1844-O blundered date half in VG-10 for $35 and I thought to myself that I should quit while still ahead. Plus, I lost track after about 4 months of buying and selling, it just got too confusing separating the game coins from what I wanted for my collection!!!

My other goal this year was to expand on my Bust "anything" collection and focus on quality over quantity coins. I've added 2 Draped Bust Large Cents, 1 Capped bust Half Dime, 5 Capped Bust Dimes, 0 Bust Quarters, and 4 Capped Bust Halves. I would say that it was a very successful year for my collection. I also picked up some more additions besides Bust stuff that are awesome; one particular 1865 2-Cent piece in MS-65RD w/ X-Mas colored toning...SO COOL!!!

Ok, enough of me, I'll pass on the torch to other members.

My goal was the same this year as it's been every year; to nail a 1965 SMS Kennedy in DCAM, bringing my proof Kennedy short set to 100% deep cameo. This year, I finally did it!

I spent WAY too much on mint products (got the "flip-in-2008" bug) and not enough on my core collection.

Brothers, my goal was to get as far as possible into an MPL set. While I did get the set completed, I'm still looking for some upgrades.

Next year, I'm going to work on a set of Flying Eagles.

I got tired of the slabbing games, overdependence on plastic and excess clout the slabbers have on the hobby. I sold off my slabbed AU-58 type set, or what there was of it. I miss some of the coins, but I feel like I made the right call as I think about pursuing other interests, some of which may include slabbed coins, but they won't specifically be the emphasis.

I'm working more on my other raw circulated collections and may slowly resume one (mostly slabbed) endeavor, an 1877 type set which may take a while given several of them are key dates well into four figures. Still I think that would be a fun "box of 14."

I made my mind up to have the #1 1981 Registry mint set by the middle of the year, and not only accomplished it, but
also acquired all of the 2007 Mint products that I wanted along the way. image

I had a goal to attend a major coin show in '07.

As it turned out, I attended 4 smaller ones (1 in Florida - 3 in the NW).

I met several dealers that I would feel comfortable visiting again to view their inventory, ask questions, and purchase coins for my collection.
That's a pretty huge thing for me.

I had many very pleasurable transactions and communications with forum members. What a place!

2007 has been a very good year for me, numismatically speaking. Although I didn't set any specific goals, I did completely change my collecting specialty about halfway through the year.

When the year began I was focused on collecting key dates in popular federal series' such as Lincoln Cents. I decided I enjoyed more the colonial era coins that I had picked up along the way. I think these are generally more rare, more interesting and under-appreciated.

Now, at year's end, I'm really happy that I made this change and I'm looking forward to a focused, educational, and enjoyable 2008! image

I did not set too high of goal for 07, but I met it and more for the most part. I wanted to spend no out of pocket money for my upgrades in my Kennedy set. To do that a set had to go and I gave up on My Modern Comm. Half's set. Sales went will and I got quit a few upgrades for my Kennedy set and it became self substaining as I sold off the ones I upgraded from. Nouthing came out of my pocket. I'm back in the top 20 for now. 2008 will be much the same but I need to refinance my fund's. I still have a few things to sell. I plan to start a new set if it becomes to hard to find any upgrades in my budget range for my Kennedy's. This new set will only be put online when it's done.

My goal was to buy all of the US gold and platinum eagles that were minted and thereby corner the market. I fell a little short but I was still able to get a couple of each. image

Overall, I feel fortunate that I was able to add a number of nice ms64 pl morgans to my pl morgan set, and got one step closer to finishing my cameo franklin set by adding the elusive 50 cam. In 2008, I will add the final piece (the 51), and possibly try to get back into bust halves as well...

In 2007, I finally embarked upon a journey I'd been meaning to do for a long, long time.

I finally took up Roman coins as a serious collection. And I have come far in nine months. But still have LOTS to learn.

After returning from the Charlotte show in March, I lay down for a nap one day, had a dream about collecting Roman coins, and literally woke up a collector of them, just like that. I started adding pieces right away, though I had not looked at many during the show, or bought any.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

It's lots of fun. At first I let myself be intimidated by my lack of knowledge about ancient coins and ancient history in general. I knew a little bit goin' in. But I realized there was a lot to learn and that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Now I've learned a lot more but have a long ways to go, yet.

Five goals though they were more ambitions than goals.

    1. Get some of my better modern stuff slabbed. Or, could be stated as make some coins since I haven't done that before. DONE

    2. Complete my $10 '08 Indian MM/motto-no motto collection. Not done...one to go.

    3. Continue to work on my box of 20 (sort of redundant w/ #2). Added three nice (one was very nice) dated gold pieces and purged 2 buying errors I had made. DONE

    4. Attend and bid in a live auction from the floor. FAILED

    5. Get a numismatic review of my collection from a dealer. DONE

I only had two goals for 2007. One was to collect the new presidents in MS66. Not errors (even though I did get some)
and both A and B, both mints. Accomplished that goal

The second goal was to complete my 2nd morgan set '78-'04 + 21's. Came up 9 short of completion. Any grade that
had eye appeal was fine with me. Did get a lot in MS grades but many are CirculatedCameos selected for their looks.

Did not have a gold goal even though I did sell off some between $700 and $800. This was gold I bought at $300-$400
so doubled my money and provided funds for the other stuff!

Did not purchase as many collections as I wanted and most that I did get were smaller than normal for me. I did get
one large collection and that helped make up for a bit. Small to me is under $1000 and large is over $5000. I like to
get at least one collection of some kind every month so as to keep my mind occupied with new coins!

Good year overall but 2008 ought to be better!

Merry Christmas and Happy 2008 to all,

Hey, some cool results! I'd love to see Russ's completed Kennedy set...

    I had two goals.

One was to make serious headway collecting proof 1/2-oz plats in OGP. I've done pretty well with that, including getting the top 4 dates. Still have 3 to go--and the reverse proof, of course (OUCH!).

My second goal, which has actually been much more fun, was to see how much of a Jefferson collection I could complete from rolls in one year. The results for that have surprised even me. I've managed to complete the entire series except for 17 coins. My set includes some pretty rare dates, too, such as the 1952-S, 1938, and four wartime nickels. That's with about $1,000 of searching. I also found so many Canadian nickels that I started a set of those, too. Only one buffalo, but that was a thrill, too. For collecting from circulation, nickels are DA BOMB! I'm gonna keep looking...

    1. Sell off most of the chaff. Got that done for the most part.
    2. Get much pickier in my buying. Did that, bought only one significant coin this year.
    3. Expand my photo business: Did that. I have photographed about 800 coins so far this year vs about 150 last year.
