A Steel cent (Wheat Back) in 1958 D?

Is it possible? Or have I come across a 1958 D that someone chrome or silver-plated in some way? Or, are my eyes deceiving me!!

A simple test would involve a magnet... If it sticks of course...
  • Ofcourse it doesn't! image But, what makes it this tone? It's as though both faces of the coin are Silver.

when I was a kid, I had several of those. if I recall, they were dipped in some sort of mercury compound. yes 1958-D cents.

Thousands of wheaties from the fifties were chrome plated. Some in high school chemistry labs; some by people trying to scam novice coin buyers; and some by people who just wanted to create a one-cent curiosity (like their pennies flattened on the railroad tracks).

It's my experience that 1953 was a big year for plating Lincolns.

We used to do that in Chemistry Lab... by rubbing mercury all over the cent..... with our bare fingers (and we did not die). Many, many were done each year. Cheers, RickO

I used to have a plated 1960 cent as well. These things seem to come up from time to time.
