Sounds like 'William' has a sense of humor when he pulled out the clads. This thread is fun, but by subsubscribing to it, it's filling up my email bag faster than I can clear them.
<< <i>Hey, don't pick on the Mavica! That's what I have. One that you slide a 3.5" floppy right in the side of it. HIGH TECH BABY!!!! >>
'S what I've got. With the mini CD, not a floppy. Nice camera, actually, though about as slim and portable as a boat anchor.
Friggin' backup battery in the bag is dead, too. Thought I'd charged it.
Out to the shed to get the AC adaptor. I'll shoot with the camera plugged into the wall if need be. Scans for proper detail will follow later, to see what I have.
Not even I could tell you dates yet, as I just bought the coins on the spot and forgot to bring a loupe and all.
(Hint #2- I saw several little O's beneath the eagles on the reverses.)
But first I wanna shoot a pic of "THE PILE", as received, with some coins still having Scotch tape across their bare faces and all.
Come on LM, get on with it, we're still holding our collective breaths. (Maybe this is a conspiracy to kill all us numismatists so that he can get our collections.)
<< <i>Cost me $370, $50 of which I had to get as a cash advance on my poor, battered but not quite maxed-out credit card. >>
Better post some pics quick before that 22% interest starts kicking in.
Always took candy from strangers Didn't wanna get me no trade Never want to be like papa Working for the boss every night and day --"Happy", by the Rolling Stones (1972)
My dad has about 2600 Morgans and Peace dollars sitting in his safe. He bought them about 6-8 years ago for $10 each. He's not into coins at all, just silver. A while back he let me go through them all looking for anything above and beyond just silver value. I had a good time looking through them all, ended up selling about 200 of them off, buying him gold with the proceeds and gave the rest back.
So you see. Ave Circ Morgans. Some smoothies, some cleaned, some OK, some dark (I kinda like some of the dark ones, actually).
23 Morgans and 13 Peace. (One VG 1923 Peace not shown in the pile- I flipped it to my favorite teller at the credit union, who helped me figure out how to finance this deal and who also scored me three rolls of 40% halves at face, once. Can't hurt to have her on my good side.) One Peace (bottom left amongst the Peace dollars in the first pic) has a minor clipped planchet at the bottom of the obverse. One or two Peace dollars are lustrous and appear at first glance to be borderline UNC at least.
8 Ikes appear to all be clad, with a mixture of Bicentennials and eagle reverses.
Now you know everything I do. Not even I have yet gone through and flipped over the unholdered Morgans yet to see what date/mint combos there are in the pile. While in town, I didn't examine- I just counted and bought and left.
It is gonna take some acetone baths and sorting before I can give you a date/mint list.
Well, I can give you the list before bathing the stickered pieces. Stand by for that.
But better scans will have to wait until post-acetone cleanup and likely will not be posted until later tonight while I am at work on the graveyard shift. I will try to scan them before I go back to bed for my pre-work naplet, but I won't upload them until late tonight. I'll carry them to work on my flash drive.
Before we even examine the dates and mintmarks and grades, I can summarize it thus far:
36 Morgan and Peace dollars for a buck below melt? Not a major score, perhaps, but not bad, either. Not bad at all.
And eight Ikes at a buck and a quarter each is better than the lot I just bought off BST for $1.40 each, though I suspect the BST lot will be better coins (more lustrous, without fargin' stickers on 'em). I haven't yet opened the roll of BST Ikes, which, like guitarwes' BST Morgan lot I just bought, arrived very recently. Some of today's Ikes look like they might be decent AU coins with luster, and maybe an UNC or two.
I guess it pays to be the only brick-and-mortar coin dealer in an 80-mile radius, even if, as a tiny antique mall consignor, I only have one or two bricks and a tiny splotch of mortar.
I seldom get calls like this and they seldom pan out. Only once before did I buy a hoard worthy of remembrance, and that, believe it or not, was a Darkside lot I named "The Everett Hoard".
Sure is nice to see a thread about plain ol' Morgans that aren't in some fancy-smancy slabs for a change Reminds me of the old days when people collected Coins..... not plastic..
OK. Preliminary list of the 23 Morgans. Quickie, first-impression grades- don't hold me to 'em.
1878-S, F-VF-ish; nice grey midgrade CircCam
1879 VF-ish, cleaned, not horrible
1879-O VG-F-ish, dark, many rim nicks
1879-S (in 2x2) VG-ish, old scrubbing, some hits
1880 (in 2x2) ditto
1882 VG-F; medium grey CircCam- decent
1883 G4 medium-dark grey; probably original, but worn
1884 F+; not bad but peeling the tape off the front took some of the toning with it- a post-acetone soft cloth rub should even things back out without making it too shiny
1886-O VF-ish, slate grey, light CircCam, nice
1887-O (in 2x2) VG-ish, scrubby like the previous ones in 2x2s
1880-O (in 2x2) AG, rough, looks like it was sandpapered
1889 AU, goldish color, faint luster, very SWEET for the price
1889-O (in 2x2) VF+ to XF, cleaned but not as bad as the previous ones in 2x2s; overall the 2x2 holdered ones have that slightly abused flea market appearance
1891-O FR2
1896-O VF+, grey, quite nice; the look I like in a circ Morgan
1899-O G4; quite dark with black toning, but lighter devices makes for excellent CircCam contrast
1900-O AG (in 2x2)
1900-O VG+-F, small rim tick at 12:00
1901-O G-VG; dark, rim bump at 3:00
1921 AU; not much luster but decent
1921 ditto, except with a gash on the cheek
1921 AU55-58; faint cartwheel luster under toning- nice
1921-D XF+, goldish toning, not bad. (Boy, I forgot how tiny the mintmarks were on these!)
There you have it. A thumbnail sketch of the Morgans. I will have to do the Peace and Ike dollars later and I'm now not so sure I am gonna do the scans of the Morgans tonight, after all. I am too tired. Besides, they have to be acetoned and all that.
I'm off to bed for a nap, soon. I'll probably carry the hoard to work with me for fun. Won't be able to scan pics, but will be able to examine them more and give a rundown of the Peace and Ike dollars. Besides, I have a coworker who wants Ikes for her hubby, who's a stage magician. If they're not that lustrous and there is nothing special in them (tell me what to look for, Ike-a-zoids), then I will sell them to her at work for her hubby's coin tricks.

More than likely, circulated common date Morgans in Whitman Holders.
Edited to add: Damn! Shoulda read the whole thread!
What were the clad IKE's?

No GSAs or slabs, probably no MS or even AU, but we have silver, Houston.
Maybe worthy of a minor "you suck", but not on a par with my cherrypicking that XF 1914-D cent from a bulk wheatie roll, by any means.
Hey, don't pick on the Mavica! That's what I have. One that you slide a 3.5" floppy right in the side of it. HIGH TECH BABY!!!!
now, SPILL IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.

"Pile" pictures coming ASAP, I promise, barring any further technical difficulties.
I predict he will edit his thread for spelling before posting pictures.

36 silver dollars @ $10 ea. = $360
8 Ikes @ $10 the lot = $10
Keeping y'all on the edge of your seats = Priceless
Cost me $370, $50 of which I had to get as a cash advance on my poor, battered but not quite maxed-out credit card.
Oh, and we have Peace on earth, too.
(One of which has what I thought was post-mint damage at first but which proves to almost certainly be a very slight clipped planchet.)

I agree. I've watched this thread also and I must admit, it felt like we were all 'in' on the buying the way it played out.
Very enjoyable and good luck with your next purchase!!
