Found a rare VAM - 1891 VAM-2A - Moustache

Found this among a group common Morgans that I had put away a while ago... Checking further, I understand it is a very rare VAM. Graded AU55.

Very cool, I like it. I read the description on Vamworld and can't figure out why it's only an R5. Is there any price history on this type?

Despite the rim hits, that is the nicest EDS/MDS of that rare VAM I have seen I am sure. Very nice find. Not sure if PCGS slabs it as a 2A, since it is not LDS, but NGC does. I'm sure those nicks would be overlooked to get it in whoever's plastic.

Oh yeah, that too. (But Liberty doesn't suck.....the snot; otherwise it would be the LDS. The break is too short but is nonetheless very impressive and rare as hen's teeth with so little wear.)

Actually, I wonder what that sucker would grade. If there is wear, it would probably go AU58. But it might very well be full UNC. The fields in that die state are rough as seen in the close-up. If ther eis any wear, it is veyr minimal. I think it is probably an UNC, MS62-ish.

To me this looks similar to the coin listed on Vamworld. If this is EDS/MDS does anyone have a picture of an LDS? Thanks

Yes, that is the latest state I can find on the net too. I believe that is the LDS actually. I was going by the image in the original Top-100 book (may be the same as in the later, spiral-bound, editions but don't know). There is a hit on the upper lip that on casual inspection appears to suggest a longer break.

This may indeed be the finest known and perhaps the only UNC known for the variety. Has anyone else seen or heard of an uncirculated 1891 VAM-2A? A very important coin that, if it was mine, would be off to PCGS under the $50 service level right away. (With the added VAM service too of course.)

This coin is not an UNC coin. Photo doesn't show some obverse field marks as clearly as you see with the naked eye... a bit more evident in the close-up photo. It is graded AU55... I thought it should grade AU58... none the less, clearly a full moustache, LDS coin.

Still possibly the finest of the rare VAM, certainly high on the census. I am not a huge plastic fan, but that does need to try to make it at PCGS. Is it in NGC plastic now?
