  • is that dime real?
  • someone made this dime (in or around 1842) to pass at face value. not intended to fool a collector, just so the counterfeiter could eat. kind of cool huh ?
  • ya kinda cool
  • Couldn't the guy who made it make more than 10c in the time it took him to make it if he just got off his lazy azz and got a job?
  • i agree (partly) but consider just the difficulty in obtaining the needed materials in 1842 jobs must have been tough to come by or this guy was in fact just too lazy or maybe he figured, hell i can go to work all day for 10c an hour or i can literally make a dime every hour and be my own boss, hell, the guy (or girl) may have made the dimes while AT work, hard to say
  • Nice contemporary counterfeit.
Did you pick that up today in Dearborn?
I went to the show today for awhile.
To tell the truth, I didn't find anything good.
I bought an 1877-S Quarter with a strike doubled mintmark, and an 1845-O Half with a repunched date, WB108. Neither worth much of any thing but I didn't have either of them.
I had thought of making up a set of all the die varities of 1845-O Half Dollars some time ago. Theres a lot of neat varities of that. I think this one I got today makes 4 or 5 different I have now.
I saw an 1841-O Large O closed bud reverse dime a dealer had. I told him I wasn't in the market for one, but wanted to look at it. It was a nice Good 6. I asked what he was looking to get out of it and he said $1500. He'll sell it, but not to me. I have the rarer 1841-O Small o closed buds reverse dime in about the same condition.
There was a definate lack of Seated material at the show. It seems to get worse every show I go to. Years ago, not many people collected the Seated coins, and a guy could cherry something good right along. No more. There's too many people now that realize the value of these and are snagging them up.
There was a pretty good crowd there, and that surprised me, given that that theres been talk the coin market has slowed.
I think we're pulling out of the summer doldrums.
I enjoyed the show in spite of the lack of material I collect, and saw many old friends.
The fall MSNS show in Dearborn is my annual 'trip to Mecca'. I have to make it.

I picked up some ancients from Liberty coin. My first three. I pretty much buy something from them every time I see them at a show. They have provided a wealth of info to me over the years and even once foiled a theft of some of my coins. Each of them Alan, Paul, Tom, et al are just honorable, classy guys.

I may go back and get a table for tomorrow or Sunday. I have so many CBH dups and with my second entering college next fall, I figure it is time to share!

And, re that 1842 contemporary counterfeit - Very cool!

Well, you were in Dearborn. Suburban Detroit is not notorious for crime. Hyatt is a nice venue. I have never heard of anyone getting robbed at the Dearborn show. Spring or fall.

Just be glad you didn't get arrested, it is truly the twilight zone of the legal world.
  • yes the 1842 bogo was obtained at the show, i was milling around the table of LBRC and i asked larry if he had any phony seated dimes, a guy by the name of brian was there and he and i engaged in conversation, then he told me that a dealer had one of these but wasnt sure if it was for sale, well i found the dealer, inquired, and the guy didnt seem very interested in parting with it, after a few minutes he said those magic words, make an offer. well, i wasnt looking for a smokin deal, and i guess my offer was more than he figured it was worth. so now its mine
  • Suburban Detroit is not notorious for crime wow, i learned something new today !

Only robbery at the show I have heard of was around 10 years ago a dealer was loading or unloading (don't remember which) his inventory that was in a suitcase from the trunk of a car in the valet drive up area in front of the hotel and someone made off with one of the suitcases while he wasen't paying close attention, they grabbed it out of his trunk and sped off in a car.
  • My wife and I attended the show the first day (Friday). It was nice meeting two new forum members (new to me), face to face, and always a pleasure. The show was hopping pretty good all day long. As usual there were a good amount of collector coins for sale - something this show is known for having. Dealers that I talked with (at least those with properly graded coins) said that they had had good sales. I thought some of the prices asked on the floor were "nuts" but then, too, I still remember "the good old days!" Grade inflation, with raw coins, was evident with perhaps 50% of the dealers, in my opinion. Key coins were there too, for most series, but were priced well above the going price sheet/guides.

I picked up a single piece for my set and also an 1824 Capped Bust Half counterstamped piece. After the show we met up with my publisher and his wife and a few other collectors for what turned out to be an enjoyable four-hour dinner at Kiernan's Steak House! (Voted the best steak house in Dearborn by the way - Try it!). All in all, it was an enjoyable day.

We planned on attending today (Sat.) but unfortunately I woke up this morning with a mild head cold . . . just enough to roll back over and sleep a good percentage of the day! Of course, now I'm wide awake so I thought I'd take a few shots to post here.
