Which would you choose - Silver or Gold?

Suppose you were given a choice - you could choose $1,000 worth of gold, or $1,000 worth of silver. Which would you choose?

Assume that this is just bullion, and there is no numismatic value attached.

silver has the short term potential for a greater percentage profit
with less chance of a loss.

i really do not see silver below 10 bucks ever again.
while gold i can see dropping to 699 very easily though long
term i like it a lot.

since when is 1000 dollars of silver hard to store?
even 10,000 would fit in a box in the closet easily.

if you mean a safety deposit box, sure i can see how 10,000 worth
would be difficult and prob cost more then 25 a year in rent.

Gold since it's a precious metal unlike silver which is a base metal.

i disagree with you perryhall and here is some info i dug up.

"In chemistry, the term base metal is used informally to refer to a metal that oxidizes or corrodes relatively easily, and reacts variably with diluted hydrochloric acid (HCl) to form hydrogen. Examples include iron, nickel, lead and zinc. Copper is considered a base metal as it oxidizes relatively easily, although it does not react with HCl. It is commonly used in opposition to noble metal.

In alchemy, a base metal was a common and inexpensive metal, as opposed to precious metals, mainly gold and silver."

"A precious metal is a rare metallic chemical element of high economic value. Chemically, the precious metals are less reactive than most elements, have high luster, are softer or more ductile, and have higher melting points than other metals. Historically, precious metals were important as currency, but are now regarded mainly as investment and industrial commodities. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium each have an ISO 4217 currency code.

The best-known precious metals are gold and silver. While both have industrial uses, they are better known for their uses in art, jewellery and coinage. Other precious metals include the platinum group metals: ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum, of which platinum is the most widely traded. Rhenium is a precious metal that is not part of the platinum group or one of the traditional precious metals."

sooo silver does corrode but i guess not at a fast enough rate
to lump it into the base metal category. it also has history on its
side to be consider more often as a PM.

also kitco has a base metal page, i do not see silver listed ;-).

apmex kills you on the shipping.
take a 10 ounce bar of silver for example. you will pay close to
    159-160 shipped to your door.

you can goto a brick and mortar dealer and get it for 153-155 cash.

why pay more? call around and go pick one up.

Silver is very abundant where as gold is starting to have production delivery problems even with US Gold having record finds. Platinum is even worse. Silver? Heck, there is enough silverware and/or tooth fillings out there to more than double the current silver market. How many of your place sets are gold or platinum? I'd say . . . none. Okay, maybe you Hillary but I'm not sure we care. image

In MI, Liberty Coin out of Lansing is one of the two largest bullion dealers. They are both honorable and fair. I once told my wife to contact them for disposition of my collection in the event of my demise as I trust them implicitly.

LOL and if you bothered to read the entire threads you would see that all of those were resolved or were completely bogus. Trust someone who has let them hold $10,000 worth of bullion at a time, made product and cash withdrawals and sold them product then shipped it to them.

well, you buy a 2005 ms69 first strike silver eagle the later part of 2004 for around $25 (when silver prices considerably lower than now) .....yet today, you resell them ...you get your $25 back ......you don't get $40 for them.

...and for silver bullion bars and rounds now ...silver can be $13.00 ..or $15.00 ....people give about the same price for them in open auctions on eBay. Silver buyers can be a rather tight bunch, huh? That's why when silver is stable for long periods at the lower prices, dealers brainwash the idea that a considerable premium is just ...and silver buyers learn to accept it. But when silver suddenly starts rising, those just premiums don't mean anything then. They want the bars/rounds at very near silver spot. Telling them that this bar has a collector's value $10-$15 over silver spot, it then means very little, because they just don't picture an ounce a silver worth more than $20 tops. If silver was to catch up to the 16:1 ratio gold to silver....do you think that now silver buyers would shell out $50 for a bar/round?

Some exceptions to the rule, but silver is truly the poor man's gold. It will remain confined to the mentality of the poor, if not for increased industrial demands surpassing and creating significant rises, silver is a waste of time and space compared to gold. IMO

I like both but with only a grand I'd put it in Silver Eagles or 90% US coin silver.

While I never believe they will take Americans gold any longer I could see where they take Silver for US holder if it's as down as they say since it's needed in industry a lot more than gold ever will be.

    Do you agree with Jim?

The Disinformation Provided By Mainstream Media

    Author: Jim Sinclair

    Today’s Madness:

I am so strained when I see misinformation or disinformation like the following outrageous incorrect commentary.

Gold, Silver Fall as Citigroup Downgrade Sparks Risk Concerns
    By Pham-Duy Nguyen

Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Gold and silver fell as a drop in U.S. stocks curbed investments in riskier assets such as commodities.

U.S. equities declined after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. placed a ``sell'' rating on shares of Citigroup Inc., the largest U.S. bank by assets. Japan's currency rose as traders repaid yen- denominated loans that had financed investments in higher- yielding assets. Before today, gold had gained 23 percent this year, reaching a 27-year high of $848 on Nov. 7.

``Risk aversion continues and that hurts all investments, including gold,'' said Leonard Kaplan, president of Prospector Asset Management in Evanston, Illinois. ``Investors are taking huge losses so they're not eager to invest in anything.''

Gold futures for December delivery fell $7.70, or 1 percent, to $779.33 an ounce at 11:49 a.m. on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The price dropped 5.7 percent last week, the most since early March.

Silver futures for December delivery fell 28.5 cents, or 2 percent, to $14.225 an ounce. Before today, the metal climbed 12 percent this year.

    Jim Sinclair’s Commentary

Gold is a product of the dollar and the dollar is a product of the Formula. Risk hurts the dollar, which in turn strengthens Gold. After the disinformation is digested watch Gold break above $850 on its way to $1050. That disinformation is another attempt to draw a negative Gold chart. Gold was up over $7 last US evening until hit this morning by the usual suspects.

Please note the last statement of the Formula, which is 100% correct.

"I heard all this "slow business" as negative to gold talk in the 70s. It was totally wrong then. It will be exactly the same now."

    Jim’s Formula:
    September 1, 2006

First interest rates rise affecting the drivers of the US economy, housing, but before that auto production goes from bull to a bear markets.
This impacts many other industries and the jobs report. An economy is either rising at a rising rate or business activity is falling at an increasing rate. That is economic law 101. There is no such thing in any market as a Plateau of Prosperity or Cinderella - Goldilocks situations.
We have witnessed the Dow rise on economic news indicating deceleration of activity. This continues until major corporations announced poor earnings, making the Dow fall faster than it rose, moving it deeply into the red.
The formula economically is inherent in #2, which is lower economic activity equals lower profits.
Lower profits leads to lower Federal Tax revenues.
Lower Federal tax revenues in the face of increased Federal-spending causes geometric, not arithmetic, rises in the US Federal Budget deficit. This is also true for cities & States as it is for the Federal government.
The increased US Federal Budget deficit in the face of a US Trade Deficit increases the US Current Account Deficit.
The US Current Account Balance is the speedometer of the money exiting the US into world markets (deficit).
It is this deficit that must be met by incoming investment in the US in any form. It could be anything from businesses, equities to Treasury instruments. We are already seeing a fall off in the situation of developing nations carrying the spending habits of industrial nations; a contradiction in terms.
If the investment by non-US entities fails to meet the exiting dollars by all means, then the US must turn within to finance the shortfall.
Assuming the US turns inside to finance all maturities, interest rates will rise with the long term rates moving fastest regardless of prevailing business conditions.
This will further contract business activity and start a downward spiral of unparalleled dimension because the size of US debt already issued is of unparalleled dimension.
Therefore as you get to #12 you are automatically right back at #1. This is an economic downward spiral.

I heard all this "slow business" as negative to gold talk in the 70s. It was totally wrong then. It will be exactly the same now.
