Largest private numismatic transaction ever just completed

  • Any well-matched set of coins is fantastic to look at. Anything from a perfectly matched set of vg Mercs, to the collection referenced by the OP. However, from the title of the post, it sure looks like the OP wanted to stress the money aspect of the transaction.
  • In all reality that was a good deal...........

You get over 1000 of some of the rarest coins all assembled and graded
for right at about 30K @........................

If I had deep pockets , that would be a fine way to go............

If Mr. Simpson studies each coin for a whole day , he will be amazed for just under 3 years.

I didn't say they were junk.

I've not seen any multi-million dollar collections filled with junk in all honesty.... and no one who I've know in my lifetime with that kind of dough who doesn't know what he is doing. All I've the people I've know personally with that kind of money were self made, and as such were pretty savvy with what they did with their money, coins or otherwise.

Any idea how long it took Laura/Legend to put that set together?

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Maybe that's why the thread is still alive??

leaving out the word "reported" kinda makes one think that there hasn't been larger transactions at all, which IMO, it would be silly to assume.

Don't get me wrong here, I think this one transaction is outstanding and will be more than happy to view the set given the chance, I always was one for them amazoniansimage

How many $30M collections do you think are even in existance, let alone that change hands without a single peep on the very close knit coin bourse?

It's possible [for instance, theoretically Ford's stuff could have been sold privately first and then auctioned] but not likely.

With all due respect, if you don't care then don't post to the damn thread. Leave it for those of us who *do* care.

probably not many, but I still think it possible larger transactions have gone unreported

I agree with you that it's theoretically possible ... but it would require a coin dealer [or two] keeping his mouth shut. Now what are the odds? image

...not to trivialize the special quality of such a collection or transaction...

Coins such as this 1792 pattern, before the US Mint was officially authorized, are in my opinion National Treasures. I would love to see them at the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian someday.

Don't get so touchy. I did see a few folks show up with the Crisco for you. Like I said before, if you had titled and started the thread with a focus for the collection, it would have looked fine. But instead, it looks like just another ad for Legend. You could have mentioned the dollar amount as a footnote.

Nice! I will take 5% vig on $30 MM any day of the week.

How about a more standard 15-30% vig.

The only thing I put in the thread was that the ENTIRE amazonian set will be on display together sometime. I didn't mention Legend one bit.

    << <i>Why would a numismatic sale be poofable? >>

here is one example: when it is the world's largest darkside auction, in both dollars to be generated and prestigious coins, and your firm didn't grade ANY of them. The upcoming 'Millenia' auction that used to be on PCGS's website, was taken down after they realized that ALL of the coins (rare and otherwise) are graded by NGC.

link to PCGS's details on it, and their now closed link:

click here for the thread, with the now defunct link >>

It doesn't look defunct to me!!

Oh, goody!! Indeed, they are in NGC slabs which means people who can't grade "coins" will run away in fear whilst sharp eyes scoop up the treasures and then cross to PCGS for extra profits. image

Thread title: Largest private numismatic transaction ever just completed.
First line of thread: Guess the details of a $30M+ transaction can't really be posted here without it going *poof*.

I'm too lazy to read through my incredibly long previous thread, but it looks like the Amazonian patterns referenced in the Trompeter case are the same ones which were sold again recently.

Does anyone want to cull through the case and figure out the grades back then versus the grades today?
