If you had your max bid in then he just wanted it more than you. If you didn't, then it was a learning experience. Expect snipers. Good luck on the next one. --Jerry
That does look like a nice coin. Does it fit with the rest of the coins in your proof set? I wouldn't advise trying to get all 70s as much as a nicely matched set; but that's up to you. Anyway, max bids are for as much as you're willing to pay. If you get outbid, that should be ok. One thing that will bury a person in this hobby is not being disciplined in bidding.
Have you considered doing an 1885 year set, proof or mint state? There are some challenging issues, like the nickel.
I predict if you keep bidding $310 or so you will end up with one.
Personally I'm bidding a bit less for the under grade. However I would like to be #1 in my birthyear Registry set and will pay for plastic to some extent...

Amen to that, I like many have learned the hard way. Now I ask a lot of questions and only bid on a about 10% of my watched items. There have been 81 graded, so you have 80 more chances. Not to bad of a price, they have been going for over $400 on Heritage.
<< <i>Save yourself some MAJOR coin relative to the worth, and "settle" for a PF69. Trust me on that one.... or not, ultimately it's up to you. >>
I agree completely. In my opinion, PR70's have no where to go but down in value. Don't believe me? Used to be that PF70's would fetch upwards of $400-$500 - now down to $300+ - someday will settle in the $150-200 range in IMHO.
If you really really want a piece of plastic that has 70 on it, then go ahead and spend the money. You are certainly free to collect what you want. But don't expect to make a profit.

LCC sells tons of these ..watch down the road he will offer another one
Don't worry about it. I just lost an item that I've been waiting on for two years to a sniper. But if I'd wanted it bad enough, his snipe would have fallen short.
Another option would be to look through the original proof mint sets yourself and try to find one. I bet there are a lot, make that ...A LOT... of really nice coins out there in the gazillions of proof sets just sitting around not yet looked at. I know that I have at least 10 sets from 85 that I haven't given a second (or first for that matter) glance at yet.
Just go to their website and buy one. Or call them up and haggle over the phone. Tell them you were the underbidder on that auction and ask if they have another one for the same price.

Geez...never been on somebody's chitlist for bidding on an ebay item

What he said. If it's any consolation, your sniper got sniped themselves last night...three times.

Only PF70DCAM will do for my birthyear >>
Why exactly......do you want this?
Is it because you could lay claims to owning one of the 81 that have been graded at that level?
Do you have some belief that a PR70 will always be better than a PR69?
Do you have some idea in your head that others will look upon you with more dignity than others?
Do you think by begging for such a coin will show how great a coin collector you are?

Yea, that's because there's a noticable difference between a 64 and a 65.
