Let's start a war over the 1821 Large Cents...

Telling the 1821 large cents apart...the following diagnostics are from the Noyes book...

N1: no inner circle, large T on top of RY, legend close to wreath, I not dotted

N2: inner circle, T even with RY, legend away from wreath, I dotted - the inner circle should be able to be seen in my crude picture.

...Wright suggests looking at the lettering, one penny having Square Serif letters and one penny having Century letters - best seen by
looking at the O of the legend and the O in One.

The N1 pictured is EAC35 and the N2 EAC50 as sold to me - Copper Quotes from Robinson has Average N1 and N2 in EAC40 respectively at
$6,300 and $3,000 - both R1 but listed in CQR as R3 in Average condition - maybe expert can chime in on rarity.

Now there's 2 different dies even I can tell apart. image
  • Very nice RTS. Interesting comparison. The condition census data would not lead one to the conclusion that the N1 was any more scarce in the higher grades than the N2. As a matter of fact Noyes' Penny Prices published in 2005 (followed by CQR in 2006) shows both with equal prices in every listed grade. Noyes grades being based on Average condition coins.

I have nothing intelligent to add here, except I can say that those are two very handsome coppers.

I wonder what variety the holey 1821 in the date set on the back of my vest is...

The first difference I notice is the placement of the 8 in the date over the bottom denticles. The top is fairly centered while the bottom is between.

I have an 1821 large cent (F-VFish) from my boyhood collection, and it is sitting in my Dansco 7070. Thanks to this thread, I now know that it is an N-2. image

Here's mine- one of the few early coppers I have ever purchased in an NGC slab. I should free it just so that I can get a better photo of it.

  • One of my favorite dates! I purchased this one a few days ago. This appears to be the N1. Thanks for the thread! Seems this date is undervalued, with mintage of only 389,000. Some great examples you have posted here. Hopefully, we'll see more!

I don't have an 1821 cent, but I do have that Exploited album.

  • Didn't realize that was an album. I'll have to pick one of those up for my vinyl collection.

Look closely at the point of the high leaf under C in AMERICA. Clear difference in its position relative to the C. Same thing for the point of the high leaf under the F of OF. Very clearly a positional difference.

    Same here.

Didnt think there would be that many people into 80's punk on here.
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

It's times like this I wish Tom Reynolds posted here.
  • Here is the one in my 7070 having a hard time telling the difference. I think its N2. I just found the holder it came in. It has L-414 N-2 R-1 what ever that means any experts here care to explain it to me.
