Do these pictures look touched up?

DoubleEagle59DoubleEagle59 Posts: 8,431 ✭✭✭✭✭
Most, if not all of this dealer's pictures in AU50 and higher, never exhibit any marks on the cheek and in the fields. Most of these au50 to ms65 coins are ACG graded. How can this be??? I do see quite a few 'ghost' images in the fields. I personally think all his pics are 'photoshopped', but I could be wrong.

They do look touched up, particularly in the cheek area.

See all the squares that aren't pixelated?? Looks like a blur tool to me.

Look at the neck on the 1884O. I saved & enlarged that one. Part of the hair has been covered. Probably cloned from other parts of the coin. Can use the "retouch face" on Adobe to clone over damage.

There appear to bee two things going on:

    1. the 1886-O image has been retouched to either blur or remove (by cloning) distracting marks on Liberty's cheek. The person doing the work isn't very good at it, so it's easy to spot even in these poor images. They even clipped off part of her hair.
    2. to help hide the deception, the person doing the work also saved the images in JPEG format at very high compression. This produced the block-ish sections you see in all smooth areas, even where no alteration was made. These are called compression artifacts and are very common on ebay and other internet images. Not only does high compression produce small, fast loading files, but it obscures detail including the sloppy retouching.

    Nice work everyone, especially 'coinkid855'.

I'd say that is definite proof of picture tampering.

Well one thing I learned tonight is the technique of enlarging the picture to 500X (by copying and pasting it to MicrosoftWord), the 'doctored' areas show up easily.

I have done this with two of these pictures and there are 'doctored' areas on both these coins and on both obverse and reverse.

I don't know about you, but this kind of deception really pi**es me off.

Retouched, blurred, and then low quality JPEG to attempt to hide it.
