Gotta applaud the ebay scammers....

Have just had a handful of auctions close, some more up, and my email box is getting heavy with "you just listed" and "just ended" and "payment received"....so, a question about an item sneaks in.

I read it.

"Interested in BIN....how much to ship to Canada". Well, alarms start tingling (I don't ship outside US). I read just in case, think about clicking the "Item number" shown, notice it goes to some weird place.....for fun, I click it and it goes to "an ebay login page".....well, I am already logged in and I already noticed the weird URL.

The page, in email, was actually well done. No mispellings, timed right (like I said, closing auctions going on, emails coming in from ebay and buyers, and new auctions going up).....very well done.

Be careful out there folks, it's a dangerous place image

  • I wish ebay had an option where if you so choose you could set a security filter on your account for a certain ip range, geographic location, or internet provider. Login attempts from outside the filter you specify would be rejected outright even if the password was correct. Not foolproof but would make it harder for the bad guys.

So many better phishers out there, one must remain constantly vigilent. I cannot repeat on this forum what I type in for my password when I reply to a phisher, just for fun.

Every day, and I mean EVERY day, I get emails purportedly from eBay or from eBay bidder or seller about an item I am selling or bidding on, or something about my account having a problem... this is why I closed my ebay account about a year ago. I dutifully forward all such emails to spoof@ebay.com and while I get a confirmation that these are phishing messages nothing else happens. I repeatedly follow up with a n email asking WHAT they are going to do to stop this junk, and there is no response. It makes me think that forwarding the scam messages to ebay is a waste of time.

I will no longer do business there.

The spoof problem seems to be more paypal related than ebay related. I quit paypal about 6 months ago and since then my spoof emails have dwindled to almost none. Prior to that I averaged receiving about 1 per day. Not as much reward for hacking a ebay account.

I got a very similar one. Mine did have the ebay auction number in the title. I saw that and immediately knew
it was not one of my auctions. Sent to spoof@ebay.com

  • I have found that if it is not in my ebay messages,it is not real,I also send to spoof@ebay.com, with the same reply back from them" thank you and no it did not come from us but we are working on the problem"image

  • I would be very careful even clicking on any link....Especially through the email.....Open a separate window, go to ebay and see if the message is in your message center......Do not click ANY links.....Thats just my HSO

Heres a bit of info for those who might not know.....Many times while your surfing and visiting webpages cookies are placed in your machine. These cookies we set up to origionally make it faster should you return to the site. So you dont have to download the pages script again.

However with time good intentions turn bad, now they are used to track you. And companies make big money for telling others where folks are surfing to . IE companies like Double Click, Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc... Even when searching in one of the sites....

Also there are web pages out there that can put things on your pc should you not be locked down very well.....Some of these are nasty little buggers that can track key strokes, log ins etc.....

If you think Im kidding download a anti spyware software a freebie like Ad Aware, Spy Bot, AVG, something and just watch what it will grab up on your computer....If it grabs nothing then your locked down or dont surf that much...However if it grabs even a dozen, mine grabs 200 a week on my once a week scan, you need to make that part of your routine, like updating Virus Scan....

Do not reply to these emails even if you think its funny to call their bluff, call them names etc.....Its best left alone....

Matt, quite true....but I have safeguards and know about all the above.....I did it, knowingly, and for fun (and my system is still ok image ). I do agree though, if you don't know what you are doing, aren't prepared for the consequences, then don't click!

you should not click on those links people.
a web page alone is enough to take over your computer
if their is a exploit embedded in it.

safe guards? lol. you mean anti-virus software that barely works?
turn off java script? turn off activex?

you may as well turn off your machine.

Don't click on these pirate links! When you do, you allow a cookie to be placed on your computer (unless you have strong privacy policy settings) Don't click on anything that shows as a "weird" link.

The identity and bank account(s) you save may be your own.
  • Couldnt agree more....Enough cant be stressed about this topic...

I got the same mail under the same circumstances. It quickly went into the junk mail.
