Friend overcharging on shipping...

I have a problem. Someone I buy from frequently on ebay is charging way too much for shipping. I bought about a $100 worth of cards from them and shipping was $78 for priority. Last time a checked you can get a flat rate box for $8.95. I called them on it and they said that someone on the outside does their shipping and some of that goes to pay them. Is this right or wrong? I mean, I knew this going in, but once I saw the shipping it kind of threw me off. I know that I have a policy of once you get to about $10 on shipping you don't pay anymore because I'll just use a flat rate envelope or box.
I know that I shouldn't have done this (buy) if I had a problem with shipping. But, it still seems a bit much. Any help with this?

    $78 shipping is no friend

    Loves me some shiny!

This guy owns a store I shop from and he always throws in huge discounts for me. So, I think it probably evens out in the end. It just sucks that shipping is so much. He's got some awesome cards really cheap on Ebay, but I don't know if I want to buy from him anymore on there because of the shipping.
  • Options
I'd be up front with him about future auctions. Something like:

"Hi, I'm a repeat customer of yours, and I really like your stuff, but I cannot continue to pay these high shipping prices. Can you cut a returning customer a deal?"

I will not buy from anyone who profits from shipping. That's absurd.

  • Options
His stuff is so cheap on Ebay because he makes all his money on the shipping. $78 for shipping on a $100 item is straight forward theft...

That's crazy ridiculous. I could ship a 30 pound box UPS next day air across the country for less than that.
Earlier this week I received a 23 pound turbo sent by the post office from california (I'm in Mass). It was sent priority and COD
and it only cost them $47.56. If he's your friend, and whoever is shipping for him is charging him that kind of money, you should tell him he's getting reamed pretty good on it.

How is someone you purchase items from on Ebay your friend?? You want to look at that statement alone. The guy is just trying to take advantage of you as a repeat buyer. If you didn't buy from him, would he be your friend??

Anyways, nothing you can do if you already agreed to it. Just don't buy from him again.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Does this mean it's a local shop and you could just go pick them up? If not, there is no way I would pay that much for shipping. I would cut all ties with him.....just my opinion..

I just sent an email again talking about it. I told him since I really only shop with him that I think it's only fair for me to get some type of discount. I mean, all my hobby buys are from him. He gets all my budget for the hobby.
I don't mind if the outside person is get a small cut, but come on. $78 is a bit much. It just sucks all around. For example, on my listings if shipping gets beyond $10 the buyer pays nothing more. That gives me enough to get the flat rate box and insurance on the item or items. I can honestly say I've never made a profit off of shipping. I'm not sure if this guy even knows how much is being charged on shipping. I'll keep things updated as they progress.
I really don't want this to turn ugly though. You know, I don't want to burn bridges.

Edit: He is a local shop guy. I've been buying from him for years. Well he used to be local till I moved. But I still buy from him when I'm down there. I've also brought him a lot of business in the last couple of years.

sometimes the best way to ship heavy junk, is to ship it cheap and slow. USPS will ship box A. that weighs 80 lbs, to Georgia for $75, but will ship the same box B. that weighs 80lbs for $12, but it will take 9 days, as long as you say its books, magazines etc.

400,000 commons, made out of paper, or 100 books, still made out of paper. still weighs 80lbs. low value, not worth it to the customer for overpriced shipping.
no big deal. i really dont see a problem with it, but i dont like overcharging for junk.

Unless he asked for discounted combined shipping beforehand, eBay won't do anything about it. I assume that these are all individual auctions where the shipping was disclosed befroehand?

Is he going to ship them all separately, or in one box? If it's separately, then he's stupid.

Sounds like he's going to throw them all in a ten dollar box and profit $68 off of it.

Personally, I'd take the neg and not pay him, then use the feedback to tell potential customers how he treats those who buy multiple lots from him.

    Guru,

Charging $78 to ship 35 individual cards, regardless of location and how many previous transactions, is absolutely excessive and outrageous!

Unless I'm reading it wrong or you aren't telling the whole story, this "friend" of your's is maliciously attempting to bend you over without vasoline.

You are a regular and long-time customer of his with several (if not many) successful previous transactions. You should be insulted and I can't believe you're even considering completing the transaction.

Tell him to get bent and NEVER do business with him again.

Sorry to hear you are going through this and best of luck.

When you say "won" - do you mean ebay sale? You had also mentioned his ebay shop.

Who is he on ebay and what's his shipping policy?

Charging excessively for shipping can be addressed with ebay.

This is getting quite common on Ebay. He is charging a high shiping because you do not have to pay Ebay fees on shipping, just sale value. It is in direct violation of Ebay's policies. I have seen a lot of items go fr a buck with 20 shipping. This gets around the fees.

Just got off the phone with him.
I explained some things with him and my thoughts. I also shared the thoughts of the board. Hope you guys don't mind. I told him $78 is very excessive. Especially for a long time buyer. Not only do I buy from him online, but also his store.
He told me he'd knock it down to $40 for shipping. I told him that I thought it was still very excessive when a flat rate box was only $8.95. This is how he broke it down to me.

He pays $1 to the guy who lists the card.
He pays $1.25 to the guy who ships the card.
    This is per auction.

He charges $1 to list to the customer and takes 10% from the final value.
Whatever is left over he uses to ship and pay fee's.

I told him that I thought this wasn't fair. He told me that since he sends me free crap all the time that he felt that this evened it out. I told him that it still wasn't fair and that Ebay would be pissed about this. I then told him that I knew the shipping rates and still went for the auction which was my fault and ignorance. But, I felt that since I've been buying from him a long time, I cut him deals when he buys from my company, and I've brought him business I should get something out of this.
He disagreed and I said that I couldn't do business online with him anymore if this were the case. He apologized and I said that he was getting screwed by the people he was paying to do this.

So, that's that. I feel like crap now. I know I shouldn't, but I do.

Those numbers just don't add up. He is paying $2.25 on every card? Many of the cards you bought were $2.49, so after eBay fees he is only profiting a few cents per card? Sounds like a story to me!

Whats wrong with the 8.95 charge?
He would only have to pay the guy his 1.25 to ship the package since he only has one box to ship.

I do not offer S.A.S.E. for shipping. Shipping and handling fees are NON-NEGOTIABLE. Please consider Shipping and Handling fees when bidding.

If you do not intend to pay the fees, please do not bid on my auctions. Thanks, and good luck!

By coincidence, but I bought from that seller before--had already "blacklisted" him from any future transactions because of his policies.

Guess I made the right decision.

I guess I thought I was always getting a great deal. I trusted this guy for years. I wonder how much I've really been getting screwed over.
This started with a couple of things. I was in the store the other day and he was selling 89 Fleer baseball wax for $20. I told him that I could the same boxes for $9 at BBCE. So, he sold them to me for $9. The next guy came in and he charged regular price.
Then when I was at the post office the other day, I saw something. I hadn't realized that there was a flat rate priority box and envelope. I just don't go there much so I didn't know. That got me thinking.
So, now that I'm not going to buy from him I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately there are a lot of people that love the extra cut they are making on shipping. Take my latest situation with a seller who charged $10 for shipping, yet only put $5.30 for postage and didn't even insure it. Their response was to duck behind their feedback rating of 1,500 plus. I don't care if anyone else has a problem with him keeping some extra, but it's a big deal with me. I wonder if that person has made an additional $4 cut off every sale thus far. If a person wants to jack up "shipping charges" based on handling and packaging fees, that need to put all of this in the auction description.

I thought I recalled something about online auction houses doing something to secure this sort of thing but I guess it's tough to police everything. Hopefully people will do a good job of reading the fine print. I can point you to an auction right now for a single Ripken card on ebay that's under $10 but the shipping charge is something like $2,000

    Guru,

There are some very strange things in your journey...

If you are actually going to a store of his, then why on earth is he shipping you cards through the mail?

Man, what are the odds of you buying a 1989 fleer baseball box, and the very next guy in the store buying the same? This is like a time warp as if when the boxes were on fire like during the Ripken error time.
