Sure we can. We just cannot grade as precisely from pictures as we can with the coin in hand.

We can all grade from photos, but accuracy is a different story. But some coins can be guessed on well from photos- others not so much. I think proofs are a lot harder to hazard a guess with...

  • When looking at pictures I find that it is a lot easier to tell if a coin is bad than it is to tell if the coin is good.

The angle, position, and brightness of lighting has alot to do with a good pic vs. an excellent pic...

Proofs are impossible to grade from pics because you can't see the hairlines in the pics. Circulated coins can frequently be graded with a fair degree of accuracy from good pics since usually the remaining design details determine the grade. Nothing can be graded from crappy pics.

I might not be able to grade a coin from a pic but they usually help me decide if I like the way a coin looks. image

Pictures can be very misleading... lighting, angles, not to mention photoshop..... So one can only advance an opinion (which is all most grades are anyway) based on what is there... A coin in hand will likely provide a more accurate opinion. Cheers, RickO
