How do you keep track of your coins?

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,945 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have always kept simple spreadsheets on my coins. It works, it is simple. I have my want list, morgan set and all other cons and bullion. Easy enough.

My question is does anyone have a way where they keep the list, collection, whatever you might call it where you include photos and values? I m just curious of what otions are out there. As my photos get better and more coins go to the safe deposit box I am looking for an easy way to have the coins listed and pictures so I can remember if it is a coin to potentially upgrade from.

Any thoughts appreciated.

    Heritage has a nice program.
  • I use Excel with several columns of information to allow pivoting. I have imported a few pics on a 2nd tab for visual reference, but pics can be memory hogs.

I use RED BOOK's inventory booklet and post notes to myself about the quality/grade of each coin.

I keep them inside the house. Mike
  • I use Liberty Street Coin Manage Software. You can enter your own pics and values. They give you links to sites. You can also pull up e-bay present and past auctions for coins off your want list. Your collection inventory is easy to read and add too.
  • I really don't have enough to keep track of at the moment! image

i just use the walls in my house and some day i`ll have someone help me re-discover them in 20 years.
that way i can sell the story on ebay and increase my holdings.

actually i havnt catalogued my coins yet but will get around to pretty soon.
gotta finish my hot wheels collection first though.

very impressive space monkey! is that a dynamic webpage with
a db for a backend? or a standalone windows/unix program?

i am shocked by the quality. well done!
  • hey thanks fc... all just good ol' elbow grease in Filemaker... I am a designer by trade so the fancy stuff is just me having fun... the meat behind though... the database was tricky... one day i would love to tie into some sort of automated system... right now all info is entered manually... like mintages etc... but it's ok... brings me closer to the collection... get to learn more and helps remember!

Coin Collector's Assistant Plus. There is a preloaded database for U.S. coins,Euro coins, world coins, and ancient coins. It allows me to print flip inserts, pictures, and has many report formats.. Very easy to organize collections.

SpaceMonkey... very impressive.... perhaps you should 'package' it and sell it.. looks very good. Cheers, RickO

I engrave my name and an ID number on the coin. That way I can always keep track of it. Easy to do on pure copper - 1793 cents for example - and gold, but harder on silver and copper nickel.

I have Excel spread sheets that I wrote for keeping track of my sets and to assist me with buying/selling.
I also use the Heritage free set hosting.

thanks... been thinking about that... but because it does require manual input for current pricing and such i feel some people might be put off with that... but it does have a bunch of cool features like an insurance report list which prints out pages in a form for your insurance company... showing images and values... very helpful... along with a Sets feature and also a feature that helps calculate spreads. fun stuff.

  • I use Coin Elite. Pictures of coins can also be inserted. I also keep it backed up on an external hard drive.

I use FileMaker as well, although mine doesn't appear quite as impressive as SpaceMonkey's.
  • Glad your not selling it spacemonkey. We get it free right?

Can orders be placed for a copy? PM me if possible!
  • I wrote a program in MS Access. Works fine except I have to update prices manually. Big pain, makes me want to get what Ricko uses.

You will need to register with Heritage(if you haven't already)then, once that it done you can go to My Heritage, scroll down the page until you see My Collection which you then click on to begin the online set up. Reasonably simple, easy to delete any mistakes or move coins around as you become more familiar with the way it works.
If you don't know where you're going, you'll end up somewhere else.
