What are your 7070 requirements??

Do you go key date/semi-key or grade. Obviously price and preference matters, but I am at the point for I go with a nice Rd Indian or a G-4 1877 IHC. A Nice UNC V-nickel or an G/VG 1885. you get the point. Now some keys are are out of the question, but wanted to see what you guys and gals prefer for yourselves.

I try to get either first or last year of issue. But rules are made to be broken. If I find a coin that rocks my world that isn't first or last year, I'll bend the daylights out of my own rule.

I have upgraded a few since those pics were taken, but most are still the same.

I just try to get the best grade I can afford...so I have the most common ones of each type so far.

Me to more or less, although some of the less expensive better dates (49P rossie, 39D 5 cent) have managed to slip in. I also want each of the mints represented, which will force a deviation from lowest price/best quality for certain series.

I like original circulated key date and semi key date coins in my 7070 instead of the usual high grade unc widget coins.

I have too many type sets going. 3 - 7070s and 1 - Library of Coins albums.

The LOC I usually go for the best I can afford. Need not be key or special date.
One of the 7070s (with gold page) I try to get dates where two different designs share the same date (1909 IHC and Linc), (1883 Shield and V nicks) etc.
The second 7070 gets high grade whatever date
    The thrid 7070 gets handmedowns.

Since this album is the one I show friends that come over and the discussion turns to coin collecting, they would not be as interested if I showed them worn out key date coins.
But when they see nice XF-Unc coins in the album they seem impressed & very curious about coins like Half-Cent, Large Cent, 2 & 3 Cent, Half-Dime and 20 cent pieces.
For this collection quality over rarity.

  • Mine is the same as ajia's - I buy the nicest I can afford, regardless of date. I also show this album to friends and they are always impressed by coins in great condition. XF- Unc is an impressive album. For the modern stuff I have put a 2006 W Silver eagle, and upped the rarity where I could.
  • Since the different types of coins are all in the same album I try to get them to all blend in or match each other. It just don,t look right for a modern MS69 to be next to a classic VG coin.
  • I just started my first album a few weeks ago. I never thought much about type sets until I heard all the chatter on these boards. So I bought one and gave it a try. I am hooked! I started mine and am fighting the urge to raid my other albums for pieces. Whenever possible I go for high grade toned coins, if I don't have one of those I go for a key date. So when you look at my album it is all over the place. An old worn key date next to a Gem etc. I think I am going to have to buy a few more and have one per theme! I have a lot of catching up to do.
  • I also just started my 7070 a few weeks ago. After reading all the posts, though it would make a interesting collection to look at. I'm populating mine strictly by eye appeal. The grade doesn't matter as long as I can see the details I want to in the coin. But I am going with silver where I can; Bicentennial's, State Quater.

I like buying coins that are tougher dates but don't carry much of a premium. But in the end, the most important thing is that the coin has great eye appeal and fits well with the rest of the set.
  • I have been going for best grade for the money coins - not key dates (I only just started recently on my 7070). Since I started I am thinking of having a second set for nice circulated coins. I have a long way to go.

Quality over rarity. The idea is to show the most detail that I can afford. I see a type set as there for others to see what coins the mint has made. Most of the time my viewers have no idea what is rare. I would not put a truly rare coin into a 7070.

Key dates are the best investments, but I was under the impression that most 7070 collectors don't do it as an investment. Type collecting - I've always thought - is about the beauty and difference of coins. With that thought in mind I would buy higher grade pieces that show off the design in the best possible way.

Best coin for the money, which is usually common date, but I like it to be golden or brown toned. What's the point of having a key date that is so low grade that you can't see hardly any details? The toning gives the album a nice continuity, even the modern coins if I can find them. I want all the details I can get, so I always look for a good strike. The common modern stuff I love to see in proof dcam, silver if it came that way. imageimage
