About 50 lbs of pennies, now what? Some Pics too!

I purchased about 100 rolls of pennies off a guy that was looking to unload most of his life's possessions. That was back in 2004. Most are in plastic tubes marked BU and the year they were minted. All look like shinny new pennies and are dated from like 1900 to 1978. Almost all of them have tape on the plastic tubes. Should I open them all and see what I have? Is there any value in them? I think I paid about $100 bucks for the entire lot. I bought everything he had because he mentioned he had a 1909 S VDB in there but in the end, he said he couldn't find it. I haven't looked at any of them, seriously. I just never got around to it. After I found out he couldn't find his 1909 S VDB, I pretty much tossed them in the basement and forgot about them. Here are some pics..
The blue box (the smaller of the two) has two layers of pennies, I have no idea what is on the bottom.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?!
The guy I bought them off of is very very respectable. He was an instructor at the USAF Test Pilot school when I was out at Edwards AFB, CA working there, right out of college. He told me he collected most of them when he was a child. He did not have any brothers, sister, wife, or kids and he was cleaning out his life pretty much. Believe it or not, he left most of his life savings to the girls that worked at the pool there on base! I am not kidding either. He knew I sold coins on eBay so he asked me if I would sell them for him. I offered to buy them from him and he was very pleased with selling them to me. I told him I would keep them in my personal collection (which I had every intention to do) but now I am wondering if it is worth it...

Honestly, I had no intention of looking through all of them. I really REALLY wanted a 1909 S VDB and thought I could get a better price if it was included in the entire lot. Are there any "good years" for pennies? I will go over and look at all the dates on the labels, maybe someone will find something I should look into.
edit: He may have had a beat up 1909-P VDB, but I doubt 1909-S VDB.

I thought it was probably crap... He said he knew what a 1909 S VDB was and he had one. I don't think he lied about it... Oh well. Maybe I will hit pay-dirt next time.
Neither will my pocket change if I pull out a 69-S DDO. You know how many rolls just like that I and others have gone through?? When was the last time you found one?? Chance of pulling out out- a snow balls chance in hell.

<< <i>Looks like a variety hunter's leftovers. You're OK on the 46d roll, it's worth some money. But my guess is he's gone through those like a giant anteater on a termite mound in Tanzania in early May during a waxing moon. >>
I thought the very same thing but he pulled these out of his gun safe and gave me every coin he had. He sold me a lot of other stuff, like mint sets, silver dollars, commemoratives, some weird error coin.
how about any of this crap? he gave me this stuff too.
then gave to my daughter in law. She just called yesterday saying she was starting to look through them for
varieties and such. An hour later she called and asked "did they make any steel '44's?" My oh my, yes they did
and I don't believe I gave you one! Should have looked myself!! Ok, so I say, does it stick to a magnet? Go to
the frige and find out. Phone was silent and then the response. "No, it doesnt' stick". Ah, so just a plated
'44 meant to fool. Thought I gave her a keeper there! Now, lets see what she finds.
I know that I never would have looked at all those dang cents!
Hope you have good eyes!

Thanks! I didn't figure I had very much but I appreciate all the responses. Good or bad!
With the promise of finding a 1909sVDB, I would have been dumping the tubes in the car on the way home...

Well Jesse, do like JRocco says. Search them or sell them to someone who will.
When is the last time someone found a CENT with a reeded edge ?
Same thought entered my mind........................but I do believe what you see is the cap of the tube, has "reeding" added for strength.
