Interesting Coin Star Encounter

I stopped at the local megagrocery on the way home to pick up a gallon of milk. There is a Coin Star machine inside near the entrance and today it was surrounded by a group of people busily dumping in plastic cups of coins. The same store has an in-store bank that has a free coin counting machine, but I presume these folks did not know that or wanted to support capitalism by giving away 8.5% of their cash.

After watching for a few moments I hiked to the back of the store, got the milk (yes, I check the pull date) and trudged through the frozen food section to get to check out and paid. On my way out, I noticed that the crowd was gone, so, following the comments of some board posters about checking the reject slot, I wandered over to see if anything interesting was there.

On top of the machine were a few foreign coins: Uruguay 50 centesimos, Germany 5 pfennig, Britain penny. Starter stock for the next ANA convention. The reject return bin was full – of silver dimes, $9.20 worth. I guess the CoinStar patrons figured they were counterfeit. I’ll cash in the dimes and add the money to the divorce fund.

Added comment: All the dimes were "Mercury" type. That is why I suspect the patrons thought they were fakes. (Have already checked for 1942/1 & 2/1-D....none, just avg circ F-VF.)

The ignorance of the general public in coin related matters is amazing.

Good for you Roger! Thems funny-looking dimes have silver in 'em, or that's what I heard.

I had the good fortune to be the jerk who clogged/filled the local free Coinstar (at Commerce Bank, where they don't charge the fee) recently, so I had to wait for them to open the machine to get paid. The reject slot runneth over inside, where there was a substantial pile of foreign coins but, especially, tokens. If anyone wanted all three varieties of Triborough Bridge token, they could have completed their set in one fell swoop. Nothing valuable, but an interesting assortment nonetheless.

When I asked "what do you do with the rejects?," I was stunned by their answer. "We throw them away."

Start asking to see the bin at your local Commerce Bank, people!

Gotta be cool when looking down at the "reject" slot, kinda like looking at a woman's cleavage without nailed for it.

No....looked like an extended family, based on a guess of ages. Kids were mostly pre-teens and younger.

I had the same thing happen this weekend, only less amount. I was walking out of the store when I herd the sound of silver hitting the reject tray in the coin star machine. I went over to the person dumping in change and paid them silver price for the 1.70 worth of silver and gave them my card and said if you get any more please call first before dumping.

    Hmmmmm.............
Maybe you didn't recognize it as being a U.S. coin. It doesn't have Liberty Seated on a rock, afterall.
    It's understandable.

I returned to the local megagrocery to see if I could hit pay dirt a second time.

The Coinstar machine had been removed. In its place was a bright green video rental device.

Sounds to me like those might have been stolen coins!
