Sounds to me like somebody spent the coins from a 2007 Presidential dollar proof set. The ignorance of the public in numismatic matters has no bounds.

is there any coin out from the mint with madison on it yet?

it seems that was the bank's only clue.

edited to add: lol. they did make a mistake. funny.

Looks like someone spent a collector's proof set and the local police didn't know what they were, so naturally they assumed counterfeiters were at work. Good thing they weren’t found at the local donut shop – that would have really ticked off the constabulary.

PS: Any place that calls McDonalds a "restaurant" has got to be suspect.

That is ebarrassing. I am a criminal lawyer and I pray to god I have a similar case walk through the door some day. I could just imagine the fun I could have with a case like that. Its kinda a joke that the story made the news. Must have been a light week at the PD and at the Newspaper.

I wonder how many CU forum members will notify them that they are not counterfeit. I've posted my reply to their article.

  • Why would anyone waste their time counterfeiting common circulation $1 coins for the purpose of spending? Even a job at McDonald's would yield a higher return on the time spent.

Wow! It just goes to show that the general public isn't very knowledgeable about U. S. coinage, even of recent vintage.

I think that the detective, the newspaper editor and the guy working at McDonald's are all the same person.

This is very sad... for all parties involved. I never expect the public to be as knowledgeable as we collectors, however, before the police and newspaper pronounce guilt, I would think they would do a bit of research. Sounds like the 'gang who shot each other'... weird. Cheers, RickO

I have a few proofs that didn't grade from the sets I sent in. Perhaps I need to spend the Madison ones for some free publicity. --Jerry

With any luck, maybe you can be arrested and sue the pants off them for wrongful arrest. image

I was once trying to get out of a parking garage, and got delayed because the girl in front of me would not take a Sacagawea as change - she had no idea what the coin was, and was convinced that the cashier was trying to cheat her - she eventually threw the coins back into the kiosk and demanded to be paid in real paper dollars.

    This is pretty comical...

Then again it would not be so funny if you were arrested for passing these 'counterfeit coins'.
  • sumnomsumnom Posts: 5,963 ✭✭✭
That's why I asked about the customer who paid with them. Can you imagine trying to explain in a town like that?

If they ever raided a major coin show, I wonder how many counterfeits they would find. image

None. In this case the banker is the one who thought the madison was fake because he "knew" it wasn't issued yet. At a show they wouldn't have these "expert" witnesses to help them.

You know, there's a comment in the update to the story that I had been thinking about. Because the Fed hasn't actually issued the latter dollars, they might not actually be legal tender. That's about all that he could be accused of. Then again, I'm not sure what they are talking about with the missing identifiers and that the edge lettering is too close together.
