MINT DIRECTOR WANTS REDISGNED LADY LIBERTY TO EMBODY TIGER WOOD'S AND JESSICA ALBA'S LOVE CHILD

Apparently, Lady Liberty is an old hag according to the Mint. Reported in the October 08 Coin World, Mint Director Edmund Moy stated in a interview he would like to see Tiger Wood's and Jessica Alba's love child embody a modern Lady Liberty. Sorry, but I found the refrence of a redisgned modern Liberty to a bas**** love child rather amusing. image

<< <i>Liberty should also shed her Western roots.
"[The old ideal of] Liberty is a very Caucasian figure. Liberty is no longer a Western Civilization concept," Moy said, in an interview after the speech. "What would the love child of Tiger Woods and Jessica Alba look like grown up? That’s the face I see for Liberty." >>

Moy also refrenced a proposed neo-Renaissance for coin designs to embody the american spirit.

<< <i>United States Mint Director Edmund Moy recently made a bold, public call for a neo-Renaissance of America’s coinage and medal design.
"As Mint director, one of the things I’d like to leave behind is to be known as a catalyst for a new Renaissance, a neo-Renaissance of coinage design that would reflect the best and the future of the new millennium instead of being rooted in doing redesigns of the past," Moy said Sept. 19.
Moy made the statement during the keynote address of the 30 th FIDEM Art Medal World Congress in Colorado Springs, Colo. FIDEM is the acronym for the Fédération Internationale de la Médaille (in English, the International Federation of the Medal).
Moy said this dedication to artistically enhancing United States coinage design is one plank in a fiveyear strategic plan he is crafting, along with senior management and labor teams from the Mint, to determine the Mint’s future path.
"As we try to summarize everything we want to do in a simple sentence that would encapsulate our vision for where the Mint will head, it reads this: to embody the American spirit through the creation of our nation’s coins and medals," Moy said, noting that this statement was agreed upon by those at the Mint. >>

we could do way way worse than jessica alba on a coin....

Id love to see the "tails" design image

  • lady liberty looks like a middle aged housewife with too many miles.

give her a tummy tuck, some botox...

or get a young hottie on the coin...that will increase collecting image

Looks like Moy has the same idea:

    << <i>New vision of Liberty
Moy seeks to use the reverse of the medal to introduce a new concept of what Liberty looks like today.
"Lady Liberty back then represented a beautiful woman, beautiful as defined to the standards of the early 20 th century," Moy said. "So let’s just say I’ve asked John [Mercanti] and his team to think about Liberty a little bit on a diet, and put her on a treadmill, because I view the modern Liberty as having a much smaller, more muscular presence in today’s world."
In regards to Liberty’s flowing robe, Moy suggests something closer to the simplicity and elegance of a Vera Wang dress. >>

Look on the bright side...it would be rather safe to say that this Woods/ Alba concoction would be amazingly beautiful and much more aesthetically pleasing than the current rendition of Liberty.

I suspect that 100 years ago when Teddy Roosevelt decided that US Coinage needed to be redesigned, it was not necessary to have a five year strategic plan to determine the mint's future path. He probably said get me Saint Gaudens ASAP along with McNeil and they guy who designed the Merc and WLH. He probaly also said "I do not care a whit about what Barber and the other crats at Treasury and the Mint think". This appraoch would not work today, unfortunately. I suspect there are some very talented artists out in the land who could come up with some great new coin designs. However, the mint would find a way to dumb them down.

I further suspect that Mr. Moy does not get out in public in the USA very much if he thinks Modern Liberty has a smaller more muscular look in today's world. Walk down any street in a US City and you will find both men and women (kids, teens, young adults, middle agers and seniors) who are not small and muscular dominate the landscape. So many of the folks in the USA are large and fatimage, even "The Children" who are poor and who can not survive without a school breakfast and lunch program.
  • This politically correct stuff gets me sick. Wait until all the other minority groups have their say on what LIBERTY should look like.

Only in countries with liberty can a love child get on a coin!

Why not just go all the way and depict the signing of the Declaration of Independence with the founding "persons" being female, with several being black and latino?

I mean as long as we're rewriting history to fit modern politically correct thought, why only take partial measures? After all, Martin Luther King and Jackie Robinson were of FAR greater import to the development of this country than the racist b*stard founding fathers...

There are plenty of artists in the US who could do a good job designing coins. I suspect that the problem comes in when the mint changes everything to cartoon character dimensions in order to be sure that the coin last for at least 1000 years in circulation. As evidence of this, look at the state quarter program or the president/first spouse program...when all the choices were shown, they all looked the same.. - the mint gives the artists so little latitude to work that they get bland clones as a result.

The devices and lettering of coins of old had a hand-engraved element to them - not perfect, but beautiful to the eye because of it. Much of what's done now has a computer assisted/generated look to it - too perfect and bordering on the bland and cartoonish. If the mint let the artists work, I'd suspect that we'd have some wonderful designs in short order.
