Does that include a dream vacation of traveling to the Moon and watching an Earth-rise? If so then the dream vacation. Otherwise, maybe the dream coin.
I've also already been on many dream vacations. I think my risk tolerance has decreased so future dream vacations may not be as dreamy
Well a coin you can enjoy over and over again, however, I'd still take the dream vacation. Why? Because that's what life is all about, get out and see diiferent things, meet different people, and have fun.
I'll take the coin. It lasts longer and can appreciate in value.

That is a good point. The kinds of vacations you take change as you age. Of course, the kinds of coins you buy change as your budget increases as well.
As one ages, does the vacations one takes get less interesting as the coins one can acquire get more interesting?

One area I would like to see is the Mayan civilization in Mexico and Central America, certainly doable in this day and age, working on an excavation would be a really neat thing if possible.. Having read a lot about the subject has gotten my juices going to go there some day. I guess no coin would really compare with that for me.
Coin of my dreams is 7 figures and the first digit isn't 1. I would gladly retire on permanent vacation if I was able to have that amount "net" in my hands or choose the coin.
I would certainly choose the coin of my dreams over the 'dream vacation' at this point in my life. I am single, my five children are all grown, married, and with families of their own, and there is no 'dream vacation' that could compare with, say, a 1792 half disme. Besides, opting for the coin is not an irreversible decision; if I later decide that the 'dream vacation' would be a better choice, I can always sell the coin and go on the trip. My name would be on the provenance for the coin, and I would have had the pleasure of ownership. Once concluded, a vacation trip is just a memory, however, with no resale value.

The coin... I do not take vacations.... nothing but a fleeting distraction.... and nothing to show for it. Do not even suggest memories... they are gone when you die.... so of course are coins - however, you can enjoy them every day until expiration. Cheers, RickO
If you have family, think about a vacation with them. The memories will be more long lasting. However, if you're single, just buy the coin, it will be longer lasting than the fleeting memories of going somewhere on your own.
I'll take the vacation. People say the vacation is fleeting but unless you have Alzheimer's the memories will last you your lifetime, same as the coin.

I have more memories of my family vacation to the UK back in 1971 than of any coin I have ever owned. Coins are nice but in the end are just another material possession that may or may not hold interest in the long term.
A dream vacation with my family would mean far more to me......Material things make my life interesting, but my family and time with them is what life is really all about.....
I'm all for traveling and vacations. However, in this case I would take the coin. I'll enjoy it until I need my vacation, sell the coin, and take my vacation.
But this is because I have been very fortunate to have been able to travel extensively over the years...and I've been able to take my family on some really great vacations. So a "dream vacation" is just not as important to me as it may be to others.
It depends on a lot. Depends on how likely the opportunity would arise again (to buy the coin or take the vacation). Depends on how long I have been wanting to buy the coin or take the vacation. It depends on my disposition toward vacation and coin collecting at the time of the decision. Right now, I have young children who enjoy vacationing with us, so I would probably take the vacation. Chances are, if I really wanted the coin, I would find a way to do both.
I have gotten so many coins of my dreams that I think I can be pretty objective on this. (TDN moreso than me. Would be fun to hear his answer.) Even with all of that, I would go with the coin. Unless you have bizarre dreams, the coins of your dreams are going to be very popular items. That is, they are quite liquid and tend to appreciate incredibly over the years. Take the vacation later using the coin as ransom.
I just went to Greece after a year of not collecting. I gotta say go with the vacation. Coins just don't move me as much as a 5,000 year old sculpture. And there was plenty of gold to look at, too, at the National Museum.

Why does it have to be "either-or"? If you can't do both, you probably shouldn't be doing either.

And the people you meet, on vacation are another great part of traveling! This is Lou, the owner of a company that makes custom LCD screens. I spent a week on a sailboat with him. Nicest guy you could ever want to meet!

Emmm... Life experience with enrichment, or something I could pull out of the bank vault and look at every once in a while. I actually thought about this some time. I'll take the vacation. Nothing like a 60 year vacation traveling around the world with the family and a few friends here and there.
On second thought, I'd have to keep the value near that of the finest 1913 Liberty nickel since we are talking equal values. Well heck, I guess when the five million runs out, the vacation will stop. Not inviting friends now.
<< <i>Coin. For the most part I see vacations as a waste of time and money. >>
It depends on the vacation. Laying on a beach for a week sounds like hell to me, but volunteering and helping out some kids in Guatemala or something would be a lot more rewarding. I have spent almost a month volunteering on vacations-- it's a lot more rewarding than raiding the buffet on a cruise ship.

Can we hear a "why"??? Just out of pure curiosity, and I like it when Russ elaborates.

The coin.
Vacations only last as a memory. A coin in hand is tangible and won't become a memory until it's gone.

I really don't much either. One of my favorite things to do is going to a coin show looking for that special coin. So I guess I'm...
While I'm still young enough to travel.. You never know how much more time is left..

My kids, now young adults, still talk with excitement about many of the places they visited in the world growing up.
That is priceless.

Otherwise, coins....a no brainer.
I'd recommend at least one before buying a coin worth one.

Unless the dream vacation involves diving on a sunken ship and finding a chest full of coins
Ok, ok. If I had to choose, I'd go with the coin.
