How comfortable are you with your bank?

Had to share this experience. I spoke with the credit card section of my bank yesterday to give them a heads up on an impending charge from the US Mint later this week or early next. The banks rep asked me "What is the US Mint, a company or something like that?" image I was at a loss for words. I explained, but don't think she really understood. Of course, i couldn't understand her broken english either. image

During the summer, I go to my bank about once a day. Sometimes twice, rarely not once in the day. They know me very well, and I've never had any problems at all. I'm on a first name basis with all the tellers, and they all know my name too. It's good all around.

I physically go into the bank about five times over the course of the entire year. I don't expect much in the way of customer service, and those expectations are frequently fulfilled.

I have actually never, ever been to my bank. ALL of my banking is done either through the internet or at the ATM. I don't even know where my bank is located, but I think it is in California. I"ve been banking with them for twenty years.

I'm pretty confortable with my bank - it seems pretty secure and most tellers are knowlegable. Every once in a while (~ 1 per year) there is a new teller that doesn't know how to count half dollars. I get the young tennager that wants me to pay $20 for a roll of half dollars, instead of the $10 face value it really is. These younger kids just can't seem to count.

But besides that, I am happy with the service. Since I work 1 block from the bank, I probably go once a week for money orders, etc.

Yes, true happiness comes with having little in the way of expectations.
  • My credit union went under conservatorship this summer due to bad loans to out-of-state real estate developers. Almost 30% of their assets are in bad loans, it doesn't look good. I am currently in the process of closing all my accounts, but my last CD doesn't mature till march. I hope they hang on till then! Yes, I know it's insured, but that money won't do me any good if I have to wait 3 years to get it back.
  • I'm happy with the bank overall. Been with them over 20 years. It's just that when she asked who the mint was, i was blown away. She did on the other hand change the APR on my VISA from 11.9 to 7.9 based on my long standing good credit. And 2, I don't have to press 1 for English or 2 for Spanish, YET.

  • "What is the US Mint, a company or something like that?"
In my opinion, is a direct result of...
''ALL of my banking is done either through the internet or at the ATM''

I often times get the feeling that bank tellers and store clerks are pissed off when they have to actually handle coin and currency as opposed to just swiping a card and punching a few buttons.

For f;;ks sake....the machines do all of the simple arithmetic that is involved.

  • I go pretty often. My banker knows my name and has learned to keep a strap of $2's out so she doesn't need to hit up the vault every time.
  • My bank instituted a casual dress code policy and some new thing where they call all customers by their first name/

Now the 21 year-old teller chews gum, wears jeans and calls me John when I go in there. That's annoying.

Why would you expect somebody in Bangladesh to have heard of the U.S. Mint?
I hate talking to "customer service representatives" at 3 a.m. their time.

  • I use a local credit union, I know everyone that works there, and they all know me & my habits, and that is how I think it should be.

Whenever there is a new teller, I introduce myself, let them know that they will hate me, and learn their name.

My bank treats me the same way I treat my customers, with 100% satisfaction, return business is important to small business.

Well that explains it. The Mint is all the way up in Philadelphia-- of course they hadn't heard of it.
  • I think banks are like coins! Some are special, some are good and others are just coins to spend. As for me I try to learn my customers names and know something about them. As for the employee not know what the U.S. Mint is I think they need to be more informed. After all that is where we get our money. Unfortunately there are a lot of young people working in banks that could care less and it is just a job to get through college and they are not going to be there long because they make low wages. Fools like me thought it was a career. I do try to instruct my people as much as I can about money but if they just don't care what can you do with them? We are; however told to call them by name and we are told to call them by Mr./ Ms whatever but most people would rather be called by their first name. You can tell who would rather not be called by their first names! Maybe just instinct I am not sure. If you want people to know who you are tell them you expect to remember their name and them remember yours. You never know you might make some friends and you might get the inside chances at some special coins.

    An old banker!

We get that in Publix when shopping for groceries. The check out girl or boy asks to see our credit cards, even holding onto them while we sign the bill, then says "have a nice day Tom", "Hanh" etc.

I've had very few problems -- all resolved quickly -- with Bank of America since I became a customer some 20 years ago.

The staff at the branch in my new neighborhood -- at Wilshire & La Brea here in LA -- has been uniformly efficient ant knowledgable (so far at least).

I know exactly what you mean, not quite so much on the first name part.

I would rather have the people handling my money at least have to dress well, at least pretend you are a respectable person.
