You would think a grade of MS-68 would mean a knockout in the eye appeal department (white or toned). So what happened here?

MS-68??? YUCK!!!

I think they got the FB part right though...

It often does, actually.

And while I agree with you that that particular Merc dime is not a knockout in terms of eye appeal, I personally wouldn't call it ugly, either. I would imagine there are some who would like it quite a bit.

Shapiro has pretty good taste - I'd bet that looks a lot better in person.

I don't know about that. I'm drinking a rum punch right now and it ain't getting better with each swig. It could be the photography, but I'm not so sure in this case. Either way, I wouldn't bid based on the images...

It looks fine. Toning like that can be like that sometimes. It is still an MS68. I wouldn't mind owning it.

In a perfect world I don't think the numerical grade would be effected by the eye appeal of the coin at all. It would be based solely on the condition of the coin.

years ago I bought a high grade MS washington that was toned deep, dark black. you'd think the coin was made out of coal.

yet, it had a high MS grade -- and indeed the coin was mark free.

regarding the dime--- looks like a nice one to me. I like the toning.

I've seen some MS68-graded coins that were black or funky, and with bad fingerprints on 'em.

First caveat on purchasing from Teletrade photos is to download them and autocorrect them.

While I understand this toning doesn't appeal to all collectors I don't find this coin to be ugly.

The colors are nice but the patterns are not. I suspect fingerprinting here, too.

As I said previously, I wouldn't exactly call this piece ugly, but it's not that appealing to me, either.

Major fingerprint on the obverse... but the quality of the strike is undeniable. My preference is blast white... I like them. Cheers, RickO
