10th Oz MS W plat may surpass the 2006 W in mintage. It already has according to NN numbers last year. Be interesting if the there will be more than 2000 plat sets in 07.

I thought the 07 ASE W MS was around 492,000.

That's a huge number considering the 2007 doesn't have the anniversary boost as in 2006.

Isn't that like grouping all the Platinum Proof together? I have a Barber half proof with a mintage around 700 and that's fairly typical for classic coins in proof condition.

ttown. Yes it is. He is giving the lowest mintage TYPE. Since the 2006-W was a 1-year type, only one year gets grouped.

  • Guys,

What can we say to such things. When I was given the numbers from the July report and it said 3168, 2577, 2676 and 3544 I almost fell over. These things are going to be EVIL in 10 years. Look how hard it is to find single high grade (NGC or PCGS 70) 2004 Proof Platinum halves 3 years after issue or Unc Robinson Gold $5 10 years after issue. We shall see what it takes to be a MEGA coin after the presidential, judicial, perfect union, estabilsh justice, tranquility, common defense, general welfare and blessings of liberty etc. reverse plats have built the set.

    2,577 is a LOW MINTAGE............................................

I guess it's a play on words. I consider this a series of 3 coins not a 1 year coin. When I see 19th century proof 64's going for just over a grand and a mintage of 700ish I would think this shows what the long term value of these coins might be if the Platinum series as a whole gets to the point they aren't collected as a set. We'll see, I really don't worry about how much they might be worth since I'm a collector and not a flipper. I've got a full set of the business strikes as well as the proofs and UNC W's, it's not like I'm a hater since I've collect this set the last 5 years. I just think some of the modern folks have unrealistic expectations as to the long term worth. Never in my mind would I consider a coin minted over 475,000 a good long term hold. Collect what you enjoy or you might be sorry or at least get them from the mint where you don't have to pay these stupid prices. JMO

I think what were seeing is just like in the early 80's, a coin boom that has made prices crazy. When it goes south all these coins (classics too) will go south too. The leason I learn living in the last boom is if you have material you don't need sell it and wait, you can more than likely get it much cheaper in the future. Just look housing right now, there going to be bargins when this thing bust wide open.

There were some rather odd numbers shifting around in the Gold fractionals at one point that weren't explainable by looking at the ordering trends. Any thoughts?

  • The reason the barber proofs given in your example are just over a grand after 100 years is the Proof Barber coinage is by and large not collected in full series by date. Most collect Proof coinage from the 1800s by type defined as collecting by "design denomination and composition" by proof and or unc. All the Proof Barber denominations have type mintages of over 17,000 coins. If the Barber coinage had only run in proof form for say 3 years at 700+ coins a year they would be over 10 grand each now.

One of the first things that must be considered in determining long term price growth of a coin is will the set be collected by type or date and mint mark. Mintages are only relevant in that context.

I have not looked at the gold closing events and reports closely and have not asked for final numbers so I don't know.
