What if an unnamed collector came across a wild toned silver eagle housed in an old PCI "100% white" holder at a FUN Show, and what if that collector paid stiff money for the PCI coin because he loved it...and what if that collector placed the PCI coin in his A BOX in the bank and didn't look at it for years...and what if the PCI holder continued to work absolute magic on the "100% white" coin...and what if the collector finally looked in his A BOX and saw this Eagle and said "WOW." ...and what if he cracked the PCI plastic and sent it to PCGS and PCGS graded it MS68 first time through...would this coin be AT????

Guys (and Gals), you need to remember that the American Silver Eagle is pure silver, not alloyed with copper. All you have to do is practically expose it to oxygen and a little warmth and it will happen quite quickly.
<< <i>did PCGS fire their moderns finalizer, or was that a product of 'take you daughter to work and let her grade' day? >>

ebay has proven that there is also a market for highly colorful, blatantly AT'd coins. Does that mean all of those should be slabbed too, to satisfy a "market craving" for them?

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, Towering over your head. Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, And she's gone.
I saw a similarly toned SAE at the silver dollar show in St Louis a couple of years back in a dealer's case. Asked the dealer about it and he said that he had gone a little overboard in the auction to acquire it ... somewhere close to $3,000 if I remember correctly.

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector. Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.
It would be fun to spend at the store. Would I get a dollar for it ? It would also make an impressive tip after dinner at a nice romantic restaurant with a pretty lady.
<< <i>Imagine that same "look" on a Morgan Dollar and I bet it sells for an all-time record price. >>
Gimme a break -- it would be just as obviously AT on a Morgan too!!! Come on dizzy, you know better than that...

I know Mikey, it was a generalized hypothetical. There are Morgans, commems, and others with toning that regardless of perceived originality by the skeptics, are just truly dazzling and mind-boggling. Some are far more obvious than others when it comes to determining their originality. My point was that when a Morgan or commem or anything vintage for that matter has an outrageous look to it along the same lines as this coin, it certainly commands the attention of color enthusiasts throughout the hobby. From there, once the conclusion is made that the coin is deemed original NT, records are shattered... as they should be.
Totally AT... people are learning to love AT.... soon, it will be sought after.. with super premiums... and all TPG's will be slabbing them... with preference for the more skilled 'doctors' bringing even more money "Toned by xxxxxxx and slabbed by xxxxx"... "wow... lemme give you xxxx thousands for that beauty" Sad.. but true. Cheers, RickO

"I think MrD lookin' for trouble - or just having fun."
No I'm not looking for trouble, I'm just having some fun.
Here's a "what if" story:

<< <i>toning on that "coin" is garbage. who in their right mind would want a collection of ase's that looks like that?

My dad used to wonder why people would pay for a colored television. I find myself asking the same about coins.
