I like to think of journalism as a profession that is a cut above the rest (sort of like the medical profession, where the sick and infirm are healed at the hands of a trained professional who is generally highly regarded in the community at large). However, for some reason, it bothers me when a Coin World writer makes reference to items discussed on these boards in his or her articles.
Because these boards are somewhat unregulated, you get some pretty extreme views on matters numismatic. Also, because the postings are anonymous for the most part, who knows how reasoned the original threads or the responses truly are. I, for one, give little weight to comments made “off the record”. That is why it is unnerving when a CW journalist quotes or gives credence to comments made on these boards.
I do approve, however, of when CW actually quotes a member here and identifies the person. For example, I remember that board member IGWT was quoted a few months ago, and his quote was well stated and of perfect sound-byte length (I wonder if IGWT has White House aspirations
). Do you have any thoughts on CW’s use of information from these boards? Is there any downside to doing this?

I do feel that the writers are professional and should be able to ascertain what is credible and what is not.
If the writers included inane and sarcastic comments, I think that it would tarnish their professional reputation more than it would influence the public thru misinformation.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

With all due respect, that is worthy of a chuckle.
some of the "off the record" comments bear more truth and accuracy than those where the source is identified by a trained Professional Journalist. spin and rhetoric come to mind...............
<< <i>If a "journalist" is not working by a code of professional standards, why should they be considered a professional journalist? >>
I can't believe you used the words "professional standards" and "journalist" in the same sentence!
I would subscribe if they would only send it in a plain brown wrapper that would conceal the fact that I am a coin collector.
I live in a major US city and the fewer people who know I collect coins the better.
Are there any other good numismatic publications that do send in a plain brown wrapper or that have "Online Only Subscriptions"?

I had to laugh at your association of the Medical profession to journalism. While I have nothing per se against CW, "professional journalism" seems somewhat oxymoronic in their case. I would expect Time or Newsweek to attribute quotes accurately - but CW is comparable to neither, unless your standard is "words printed on a page and folded into a magazine".
An oncologist who prescribes Laetrille and coffee ground enemas to treat colon cancer gets about the same respect from me as most "professional journalists". Today more than ever it seems that "All the news that's print to fit" (Spoonerism intentional). Today, the Fourth Estate has their own axe to grind - like everyone else. Fact checking has been replaced by fact selling.
I suppose CW mentioning banter on these boards as background, or as a general sense of mood is OK - but to quote anything as Gospel without verification is irresponsible.

When it comes to negative comments about some of the scuzzy
large advertising dealers on Coin World, well ,they could be caught
killing someone and as long as their ads are paid in advance...all is well.
