I'm not sure if I've ever held one in my hands, but I imagine they're similar to the Team Doubloons that the Saints included in their Game Day stadium programs from 1967 through 1973. Basically they're just silver and gold metal (aluminum) collector coins.

The regular issue Saints Team Doubloons ('67 -'73) usually had the two team names listed on one side (ie: Saints -vs- Redskins) and a sponsors ad on the back (Burger King, VW, Jax Beer, NFL).

The big Beckett says that the 1969 Saints Pro Players Doubloons set had 24 coins that were 1 1/2" in diameter. The coins were distributed at home games, and came in 3 different colors .. gold, silver, brass. It doesn't mention if they were metal coins, but they are different from the regular issue coins because they have an individual player on one side and a short bio on the flip side. The biggest names in the set would be Doug Atkins, Dan Abramowicz, Dave Parks, Dave Whitsell and Billy Kilmer (before he left to join a real team). The listed prices are $5 for commons and $12 for the two bigger stars.

Sounds like some potential straight PSA 10 sets ripe for the picking to me!! I bet Fuzz is probably neck deep in them already! image

    Hey Richard,

If you enjoyed The Odd Couple series, then you'd get a real kick out of meeting Art (Skinsfan). He's pretty much Oscar Madison reincarnated. Shirt tail hanging out, buttoned up all wrong, a few mustard stains .... it's uncanny!

  • Mike,

Thanks for info on the coins. I would love to see one and test is out in my new gumball machine. image I don't know anything about the players listed except Atkins but I guess that's because I wasn't born yet. image

Oddcouple - Don't know this show either but if thats a description of Art then WOOOOOOOOOOOOW. I guess I'll priority mail a tide pen to him to keep the clothes clean. I think I'll send my scanner to so I can get a scan of those 50 Bowmans.

Ok, then you want to think Al Bundy, or maybe Homer Simpson .. to get a better feel for Art.

I should have some more Salada's popping this (next?) month.... and of course, I'm still holding all of those shiney PSA 10 Buckman and Crane Disc's for you. Just say the word, and I'll pack um up for ya.

  • Bean,
Firstly that "wasn't born yet crap" isn't funny. Some of us actually remember that year (and some before).
Second, the minor temporary issue with the Dell has been corrected. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
I'm also sure that Shoulda could send you some BetaMax copies of the Odd Couple from his collection.
You really busting small packs for cards? This often an unrewarding financial gamble. Hope your results are better and would be interested in hearing how it goes. The pack I have always wanted to bust is a 66 or 67 Philly 2 pocket 100 card rack. Should be some nice stuff in one but have seen one for years. Last one many years ago at a National. Guy wanted $150, I passed. Doh.

Mr. John Vineyard is the king of all things Saints. I believe that is his set listed. I have never seen one.

CDC4- Try Keppler, he usually has some of those. Most of the other guys are FB (I think BKritz does both).

Honest to God Mr. Carlson, I thought turkeys could fly.

    Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • The Dell battle is on. I saw your nice pick-ups and yes I temporarily fell a slot but I think our battle will be like the Dow Jones. What’s a Betamax? Sounds Nasty! Does it hurt? image

Crackn Packs – It’s more fun to feel the actual cards in hand rather then the plastic slab and the excitement of submitting vintage stuff is overwhelming. I love it!

    Mike,
No kidding. My friends use to call me Felix. I was pretty anal back in the day. I'm a little more relaxed these days. Sounds like Me and Art could be roommates. We'd have cards and slabs everywhere, stacked between the beer cans. We'd be trying to date the Pigeon sisters.

I actually have many episodes of The Odd Couple on superbeta tapes. I recorded them back in the late 1980's and even edited out the commercials. Only problem is my beta machine broke and they don't make them anymore. Anyone want to buy about 150 beta tapes with some great old black and white classic movies, at least 50 Odd Couple shows, some SCTV shows, a ton of North Carolina Basketball games just after Jordan left, etc.....?

Maybe ebay them, if I could get my webtv to work properly.

Fuzz, I remember seeing those '66 Phily 100 card cello's too back around 1995 in Chicago. They were around $200 or so. I passed on them too. I thought who in their right mind would pay $2 a card for something unopened? How dumb is that?

    Lickable, you're just a youngster.

    Rich,

Maybe you should mail all of The Odd Couple tapes out to Bean, so he could brush up on a little vintage TV trivia.

It's gotta be hard being on these message boards .... and only being 16 years old.

I was born yesterday. Let's try 1973 and I do have a Betamax in my bathroom.

Side Note: Just received my package from BBCE and I have to complain. Where am I going to store all of these peanuts? I guess I need to invest in a Storage unit for these things. image
  • HEY! Mr. Bean - I like that name, very cool.

I've got to get around to other forums more often.
Had shut down for the National but back up almost 100% now.

Sold out of the 1952 Bowman Large PSA 9s and a few Smalls also, but I do have maybe a dozen Smalls left.
I put two back up in the store just now for good measure.

Will have the rest back in within maybe 24 hours.

The web address in my tag line now also leads to four eBay store, 99% of the inventory football.

Now as for the odd couple maybe Rich and i would be a good fit i always noticed when i sell him my mustard stained slabs when they resurface on ebay they are all nice and shinny again ,And if i recall the piegon sisters were redheads image

Now for you MR Couldabeen since you have seen fit to aline yourself with the VA BEAN I must now be forced to toss all of my collection to my new collecting partner the one and only FUZZ , You can just call us fuzzskin.
Of course as time goes on we will once again have to go back to ducking it out ourself but not before all of the couldabeens have seen the light.

Now this could become like fantasy football Mike you remember kicking your but in that dont you ,i just hope they fleer boys dont join uo Pure mint and wolf could be a tough team
  • Jeremy - Thanks for coming back online and making your inventory available. My wallet is screaming. Hopefully we can do a deal real soon. I've got to sell my food stamps on ebay before I make another purchase because my social security check was only $35 this month. However, I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night and I found $4 in my pocket. Where is this going? Don't Know!

    Hey Fuzz,

If you and Art are really joining forces, might I suggest that you head up the PR department, or at least send Art to a couple of public speaking courses before you allow him out in public like this. I mean, come on now ... speeches like that one can't be good for "Team Fuzzskin"

The most confusing part, is that I won first place in our fantasy football league last year ... so even his smack talk doesn't make any sense?

  • Shoulda,
First, I would like to point out that our home town Chandler boys, easily handled those little kids from Maryland. I don't mind if they don't win, just don't want then to lose to Maryland. (I don't know any of the kids but did meet three of them while they were out raising money and helped donate to their cause. Sports are a very big deal in the Chandler schools.)

Art is actually in charge of the PR deparment. He is also in charge of facilties, Inventory, strategic planning, accounting, shipping and receiving, customer service, operations, maintenence engineering, marketing, finance, Quality Control, ISO/ TS registration, AS documentation, document control, labratory management, and research and development. You can see he is a big part of the team.

"smack talk doesn't make sense?" --- I am still holding my breath on you taking down my 66 set. Before you say it, I have not updated that set in more than a year.... and no, second place has not changed hands yet. Mojo talked less smack and delivered pretty well. Is he on team Shouldabean or is he still a free agent?

Just to set the record straight, did you want to publish that list of last season standings?? I'd be interested in a look.

See Fuzz, here's a prime example of your reasearch and update department (ie: Art) letting you down once again.

I guess you didn't get the memo that I traded my high grade 1966 set to Mojo over a year and a half ago. The last time I looked, he's taken it within spitting distance of your top set now. So in essence ... his set (or shall we say, my old set + a few new Team ShouldabeenaMojo tweaks) will be the set that eventually topples your 1966 domination fantasy.

Although I do find it rather amusing that you've been running from my leftover '66 dupes set for the past year and a half, and apparently fighting a battle against an army that's been home with their feet up, watching TV, for quite some time now.

I'd give Art a raise if I were you!

Dont worry fuzz my friend Mike told me when he sold his 66 set to mojo the main reason was he had given up all hope of catching the FUZZ or for that mater even Fuzz JR,s set were out of reach.

I cant understand it mike you keep selling your sets that you had for years that always were so low they did not even make the radar board and the new owner takes them into the top 5 image

Poor Mike he couldabeen a player but now is reduced to week smack talk.

    Hey Artie,

Speaking of my crazy collection. I was thinking about you today when I got my new set of 1985 NFLPA Shakey's Pizza Redskins placemats in the mail. The one with Russ Grimm still has a big pasta stain on it. I'm pretty sure it matches the stain that was on that shirt you were wearing the last time I saw you ... you know, that 22 year old E.L.O. concert T-shirt you always wear so proudly. Any chance you stopped at a local Shakey's pizza after that concert?

    Mike

PS message to Bean - E.L.O. stands for Electric Light Orchestra. They were a popular concert band back when your parents were teenagers.

  • OK I may have to demote Art from his current position.
He is doing a fantastic job and I was going to give him the IT department as well. But last night, while I was rushing my sick child to the doctor, Art snaked a 1971 Topps Game Len Dawson PSA 9 away from me. No chance to respond, I was unexpectedly not at home.
Yes, Art has a better 71 game set than I do. But it was Len Dawson for gosh sakes!! Lenny the Cool. And he's in Maryland ? Just not right.
I have been tied up in a tight battle with team Empire in the Dawson player sets. We split 1 and 1 last year. Have lost two upgrades in the last week and one was to my old buddy!

And Shoulda, regarding your 66 set fantasy, I don't see Mojo's set listed anymore. Either he has changed it's name or it is missing. By the way I will update my 66T FB soon. That gap to Fuzz 2 won't be quite so large. I will finish that set in 8+ as well (except for that damned checklist thing..........again).

Ahhh ... UNO. I love that game!

Except for the memories of Artie STEALING so many of my cards from me when we use to play UNO for cash points back in the early 90's. We'd play up until a certain time, then turn the points into dollars. The winner got to take that value amount of football cards from the others collection. Kinda like the shopping spree at the end of the old Wheel of Fortune game.

Art hasn't changed much over the years .... he used to get fake phone calls that would interupt the game when he was loosing bad. I'm also pretty sure he was palming a few draw 4's here and there. After he raped and pillaged my collection, and the tables started to turn on him one day ... he wanted to insert a new rule where certain favorite cards would be "off limits" and we couldn't take them. After I agreed to the new rule ... he promptly pulled the pack fresh Montana rookie card (that he'd just taken from my collection the day before) and pulled it out of his box!

We've talked recently about getting together to rekindle our old UNO (and poker) war games .... I'm just worried that all of my PSA slabbed UNO cards would make too tall of a draw pile.
