Jamestown Commemorative uncirculated mintage

coinsarefuncoinsarefun Posts: 21,682 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have been watching the mintage on the uncirc's. When does the mint stop selling them?
I have noticed that the are around 16,949. Isn't that a low mintage?
Is there a possibilty of value increasing?

I wouldn't purchase any of these coins. Look at past issues with similar mintages.

You can buy the uncirculated on ebay for less than the mint issue price. One recently sold raw for 187.00. Considering melt is around $164.00, it is a pretty a good deal.

Historically a high mintage for the unc. gold. I would not recomend.

I like the Jamestown gold design (I've visited the old ruins of the original church on a few occasions) and own this coin -- GASP! -- just for the pride of ownership. (Hope I didn't offend anyone ... image)

I notice also that the Little Rock is only 86/36 so far. Another scaricity in the making? As the largest sales are usually in the first few days after release. Could be one worth watching.
They are fugly enough. What, did the guy who designed this one have a foot fetish or something? (not that there's anything wrong with that)

I own several of the modern $5 gold commems and bought them because I liked the design. Only one of them, the two-piece Washington set, has done very well while the others were simply bought near bullion and have stayed near bullion.

The prices for uncirculateds in the mid 1990's have appreciated nicely. Especially Jackie Robinson, that no one wanted. See the price guide for MS below. I think the perception that all modern commeratives are "dogs" in the long run is an overstatement.

Mintage is too high to be a good investment.

Speaking of high mintage, will both of this year's silver commems be in the Legacy set? If so, their mintages will go through the roof...

According to the redbook collectors inventory:

The Smithsonian uncirculated mintage was 21,840=$1400 for a MS69
    1995-W Torch Runner $5 uncirculated mintage was 14,675= $750 for a MS69
    1995-W Stadium $5 was 10,579=$1175 for a MS 69.
    1996-W Flag $5 was 9,174 =$965.00 MS69
    1995 Civil War was 12,735=$825.00

The Jamestown will not be a homerun, but IMHO it won't be a bad investment. Especially if you can pick it up for less than issue price. Even the coins with a higher mintage have appreciated to well above the issue price. I think the design has a lot of intricacy that many other modern commems lack.

These look to be low mintage, BUT, add 25,000 to the Unc. because it is included in a coin and medal set and add 50,000 Proofs (if a sellout) for the Legacy set coming later this year.

In the redbook I am looking at it says 21, 840 and 8,948 for the proof. Might be a (and probably is) a misprint and they have the numbers reversed.

I'd say they'll stay fairly static right now since you can buy them off Ebay and the secondary market for cheaper than the mint. I do love those designs though and they change more than just a date on them every year so what's not to like.
