No. The hazy/cloudy/distracting centers negate the great peripheral color.
    When in doubt, don't.

What standards? "Superior eye-appeal?" What does that mean exactly?

No, it's not all that attractive of a coin. Way too streaky of a coin.

not sure about the * but I don't think it deserves a 67. Kind of a weak strike on the obverse in the face........JMO.

The photos highlight all the negative attributes of the coin. I'm sure it looks a lot more dazzling from different angles. It could well deserve a star, haze and all. Many nicely toned 19th century proofs have some natural haze from the toning process. It's only been in the last 10 years or so where dipped white, and starkly mirrored surfaces without any touch of color (or haze) have become tulips per se. Those are more unnatural looking than haze could ever be.

Worthy of the grade? Sure. Some may dispute it but I don't have a problem with it.
Worthy of a *? Nope. The cloudiness/haze that is mentioned.

Shouldn't matter "what else has a *", should matter on what the * is supposed to mean.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I have never seen a darkly toned coin given a star. Even without the dark toning the haze would preclude a star.

    Yes, I'd 'star' it.

I agree it should have a star. I think IMO that when you get them graded in a set it hurts the grade. They are not willing to give it a better grade.
When I submitted my 1953 proof set at one of the shows last year I showed it to one of the graders and he said that my Franklin will get at the min. 66 or 65 cam * It came back 65cam

    sorry bad picture:

That proof Merc looks like it would CAM without the haze. If there was a way to remove the haze (or most of it) and preserve the color and original "look", that would be ideal.

A light dip in Jeweluster (or an NCS "haze removal job) might bring out the CAM contrast, but would likely ruin the color and make the coin look processed.

It is impossible to judge the TRUE eye appeal of a coin from a picture and thats what the "*" is all about.

That haze could be caused by over dipping and is not removable. Hard to say though when not in hand.
