Inferior US Mint Products - How do you handle them?

When you receive a proof set, for example, from the Mint and it has something wrong with it, say spotting, a fingerprint, debris inside the case, etc., what do you do?

- Just keep it and promise never to be so stupid as to buy crappy modern stuff again
- Call the Mint's Customer Service Line
- Send it back for an exchange
- Something else?

If you send them back for an exchange, how happy have you been with their "second" chance?

As the Mint keeps cranking out more and more "product", the quality level is an embarrassment on some of the stuff they're sending out.

On the Presidential proofs that I got, I blindly sent them back for exchange and got a good set in return. I then got my full proof sets and had 2 bad sets out of 3. I brought them to the ANA and talked to the Mint booth. They took notes of my order # and what I was going to return and asked that I send it back ASAP. The person that I talked to was going to email someone with my order # to be on the watch for it. That may have been total BS, but I don't think so. I'm pretty good at looking through BS. Anyway, I sent them out and am not waiting for an exchange.

I've sent back crappy product, and then vowed to buy future proof sets from my local dealer so I can be sure of the quality..

image I would and have, returned defective product for a refund. They are very slow crediting accounts. One note is, I would not return a coin that is sold-out, low mintage, or in high demand, as it is certain the item will not be availible for replacement

  • I got 2 crappy presidential proof sets and returned them for credit and bought a set of graded. If any of the coming proof sets have problem coins, I'll probably exchange those until I get a nice set(s).

sure gets frustrating when you see such bad quality from our mint. just have to wonder how much worse it can get.

Send it back... they replace them quickly, or give you credit. Cheers, RickO
  • I sent two out of two Presidential dollar sets back for exchange and received nice product in return. The two sets I sent back had some red streaks on the Washington dollars. One thing, you have to call the Mint with your shipping receipt in hand and tell them how much it cost you to send the items back to them. They will sent you a check in a week or so. For me, it took about 2 weeks for the coins to be replaced and in my hands. I feel they are good about replacements, I am just a little more than upset with their quality control. They're not looking at the coins they are sending out. That is obvious.

I returned 5 Presidential Proof Sets because of spotting. The first replacement set I got was fine. The next four replacements I got were all "recycled" and I returned them all for credit. The coins weren't that great, and the boxes all looked like they'd been opened and closed about 10 times already.

I believe that large dealers are returning any sets for credit that they think don't have a chance for high grade certification. He who waits to order from the Mint gets leftovers, and might as well forget it.
