PF69/70 & MS69/70 ... is it just me?
I just can't justify spending the huge differences between the grades when they look so close, where if I take the lower grade I can buy many more coins? I understand the idea of buying the best you can from an investment perspective, but to me that's always been more of trying to get MS65+ vs. buying VF/XF etc.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks.

I agree..

if does depend on the plastic, though
Collect what you like.
Learn how to grade.
Learn the typical wholesale and retail prices for the coins you are interested in.
Develop relationships to get better prices when buying and selling.
The same advice for MS70 Registry folks as for low grade circ collectors. There are plenty of grades where prices take a huge jump up, one grade higher, not just at MS69 to 70 (and that is mostly for PCGS plastic not other plastic).
I'm in the same boat if you're thinking of new mint products.

One more, if a person can't tell the difference between the grade they are considering buying and one or two grades lower, buy the lower grade coins until the difference is learned. That goes as much if not more for MS64/65 than other grades. Enjoy the hobby.
<< <i>It's just you. There is a difference between 69/70 and the market will pay for it in a PCGS slab. If you screen moderns you will see a difference. A PCGS 70 is different then a NGC 70. Expect perfection, or near perfection in a PCGS MS70. They don't command a premium for no reason. THERE is a difference. >>
Indeed there is.
For years I have been buying MS70 Silver Eagles during their year of mintage. Then wait a few or more years and eBay rewards me with a 400-500% return on my money. It's been a reliable investment return for a long time now. Yes, PCGS brings a premium over NGC, but it costs more to start with. Sometimes the best deal in terms of ROI is with the NGCs.
I only collect the proofs and I keep them in their Mint packing.

and the fact that a 70 for most moderns that are getting them, is
nothing special!! It is not unique or somehow better then the rest
when you consider more 70s are being made daily!
Now if you have a special coin that has pops like this:
MS67-25
MS68-2
MS69-2
MS70-2
well you may have something special!
but how many coins/dates/mints can you say this for?
Those that want their sets at the top of the list, spend the extra dough for the 70!
Now, if you really know your coin, as some on this forum have proven, then you can spot the difference between 69's and 70's but you have to know your coin. I'm not speaking coins in general, I'm speaking your specific coin.
Many of the Satin Finish coins are almost always 69's but if you look closely, you can spot breaks in the satin finish. If the breaks aren't there, then you've got a 70 and the extra spending money when you sell it.
Myself, I've only gotten one 70 and it was on the Sealed Anniversary Sets so it wasn't anything I saw, just the luck of the draw.
I also know that 70's will hold up your submission by a day or two to validate that 70 grade.
One last thing, just as there are grading errors made on on grade, erros can be made on 70's.
So, with that said, if you can't make one for your registry yourself then your only alternative is to buy it from somebody who has it.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

<< <i>70's are a myth created to make some people a whole lot of money at the expense of other people that aren't good at thinking things through...
Well said...and make people with a whole lot of money feel good at the expense of others by driving up prices..
I have a 30x scope at home and have spent some time looking at coins for many years and have looked at some of these hypergraded coins. It seems I can virtually ALWAYS find defects that are minimal. I then try to correlate with lesser power (5x) and still see some of them, and this on coins with 70 grades. NGC 69 mint state eagles seem to many times have markings that would put them lower is something I also see.
As the difference is so tiny, I am not sure that much markup is justified, but if you can get even an NGC 70 at a competitive price, then that may not be so bad. Occasionally they turn up at basically bullion or so. As to multiples of 69 prices , I just can not see it.
Well, just Love coins, period.
