Found a 1946 steel penny. No way it can be real right?

I've been a collector for 10+ years. Today. my sister was looking through her change and found a 1946 penny that has a steel coating. We tried sticking it to some magnets and it sticked to some but not to others. It can't be real, can it?

If it's slick then figure a mercury coating. These were extensively amalgamated
back in the '50's and '60's by kids through various means. Frequently just expos-
ing them to the liquid metal was the preferred method.

Really? I'd never heard of that before. As toxic as mercury can be, I suppose some of those poor kids are no longer around! image

We used to swim in the stuff. The stuff is compelling to kids especially in large
quantities so we got it at home and at school. I knew it was toxic and warned
people about injesting it or the vapors in chemical reactions.

The more incredible thing is that it's still used to fill cavities. I just finished get-

That's something....reminds me of a former co-worker that grew up in Florida. She told me that as a child, when the mosquito spraying truck came through the neighborhood spraying DDT, that she and all the other kids used to love to ride their bikes behind the truck to get covered in the mist because that felt so cooling on a hot day!!

Ow! We rolled our windows up until it dissipated or ran upwind.

...And welcome aboard WrightFan. It should be noted that the 1943 was steel with a zinc plating.

We used to see a lot of coins mecury coated and I have coated some myself. Most everybody survived allright. I saw one collector heat a coated scarce date dime to drive the mecury off. It worked for him.
It didn't work for me. I think it was Errol Flym who used to amaze natives and make a living in New Guinea by transforming pennies into half crowns with mercury.

IMHO DDT is not particularily toxic to human life. It interferes terribly with the calcium transfer from blood to shell in the production of bird eggs resulting in thin shells that break.

Shades of Rachel Carson. DDT nearly drove the bird on the backs of our coins extinct.

You could buy Silent Spring with a few coins back then but now most books require large bills.

A mercury plating will not attract to a magnet, but a heavy chrome plating will. A coworker at ANACS once talked with a guy who rechromed bumpers for a living (this was a LONG time ago, when cars had manly bumpers rather than plastic tinfoil at their ends), and the guy told him that when had mixed up a new batch of chrome he would take a coin out of his pocket and plate that as a test. Then he would simply spend the coin.

Well, the MOST incredible thing about mercury is that they put in practically all the vaccines (under the additive thermisol) and it causes autism. Autism use to be 1/100,000 - now it's more like 1/100. It affects boys 10 times more than girls since the boys can't remove it from their bodies as easily. Usually, after the 3rd rounds of vaccine shots, the babies start to develop autism and even get seizers!

Mercury has also been linked to Alzheimer's Disease!

A bill was given to Bush to eliminate mercury from all vaccines (a platform he supported before being elected) and he veto'ed it!

And people won't believe it because they don't do the research but over 100 years ago, the elite said they would put mercury in our shots to dumb us down. And it's happening right now and people line their kids up to get a crippling dose of poison every day!

There's a reason many doctors do NOT vaccinate their kids.

    It's seizures. And vetoed.

In addition, the argument is not supported by the FDA nor is their any more than anecdotal evidence of the above being true. The story is, however, alive and well on the great rumour mill of the Internet.

    Blinded by ego is correct.
There is no correlation between thiomersal preservative in vaccines and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism. The CDC, National Institute of Medicine, and American Academy of Pediatrics all concluded that there is not a causal relationship. Between 2001, when the IOM's Immunization Safety Review Committee initial report concluded that there was insufficient evidence to draw a conclusion concerning mercury preservative in vaccines and autism, and 2004, when the committee concluded that thiomersal in vaccines does NOT cause autism, several large epidemiologic studies, in the US, UK, Denmark and Sweden were published. Independent investigatory committees in numerous countries concluded that thiomersal in vaccines doesn't cause autism (ie UK commission on human medicines, European Agency for Evaluation of Medicinal Products). In the US, since 2003, all recommended pediatric vaccines have been thiomersal free (with the exception of some influenza vaccines, which are available in numerous mercury free forms)-yet there has been no decline in autism. In Denmark, autism diagnoses INCREASED coincident with thriomersal removal from vaccines.
    Its an epidemiologic slam dunk.

Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara; 5 September 1946 – 24 November 1991) was a British musician, best known as the lead singer of the English rock band Queen. He is remembered for his vocal abilities and for his live performances. As a songwriter, he composed many international hits, including "Killer Queen", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Somebody to Love", "We Are the Champions" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Mercury died from complications of AIDS, greatly heightening worldwide awareness of the disease.

Nope, I'm still alive! Actually liquid mercury is pretty safe to handle. Just don't put a flame to it or injest it! Had a buddy who's dad was
a dentist and we played with a flask of mercury all the time. Fun stuff!

Might you be confused with Buddy ebsen's bad reaction to the make-up
to play the Tinman in The Wizaed of Oz? I guess he got sick but I don't
    believe that was even mercury.

I don't recall a model dying in such a way though sufficient exposure to
the metal can certainly prove fatal.

Well, they only "suggested" that thiomerisol be removed, while they actually quadrupled the dose against the "suggestion" so thiomerisol has NOT been eliminated from vaccines.

Look, if you want to be informed about this issue, watch this video..

Mercury, Autism and the Global Vaccine Agenda

But otherwise, go ahead and shoot your little babies and yourself with vaccines, your government loves you and no one really wants to hurt you. Rainbows and butterflies with soft little kittens are the what governments are made from. You can trust them all.

DDT use for public health purposes has always been exempted, and is today. The US ban, and bans on agricultural use elsewhere make DDT more effective vs anopheles mosquitoes in the third world, not less. The widespread use of DDT for agricultural purposes (especially cotton) led to DDT resistant mosquitoes, as well as long lasting accumulation in water and the food chain.

"I can tell you that DDT is not a carcinogen and did not cause birds to die and should never have been banned. I can tell you that the people who banned it knew that it wasn't carcinogenic and banned it anyway. I can tell you that the DDT ban has caused the deaths of tens of millions of poor people, mostly children, whose deaths are directly attributable to a callous, technologically advanced western society that promoted the new cause of environmentalism by pushing a fantasy about a pesticide, and thus irrevocably harmed the third world. Banning DDT is one of the most disgraceful episodes in the twentieth century history of America. We knew better, and we did it anyway, and we let people around the world die and didn't give a damn."

As an "expert" Chrichton is a joke. An embarassment. He never conducted reseach or practiced medicine. He makes ridiculous blanket statements, such as those above, some of which are demonstrably false, others of which are merely rash and irresponsible.
What do you think pharmer -that we'd be better off in this country allowing farmers to dump millions of tons of DDT annually into the water supply and food chain, merely so they can have higher cotton yields? For me, no thanks.

Here's an article examining the issues authored by true experts (not wannabes who never practiced medicine) who make statements supported by data. I'd be happy to send a PDF of the entire article to anyone interested.

    Lancet. 2005 Aug 27-Sep 2;366(9487):763-73.
Health risks and benefits of bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane (DDT).
    Rogan WJ, Chen A.

Epidemiology Branch, US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, P O Box 12233, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709, USA. rogan@niehs.nih.gov

DDT (bis[4-chlorophenyl]-1,1,1-trichloroethane) is a persistent insecticide that was used worldwide from the mid 1940s until its ban in the USA and other countries in the 1970s. When a global ban on DDT was proposed in 2001, several countries in sub-Saharan Africa claimed that DDT was still needed as a cheap and effective means for vector control. Although DDT is generally not toxic to human beings and was banned mainly for ecological reasons, subsequent research has shown that exposure to DDT at amounts that would be needed in malaria control might cause preterm birth and early weaning, abrogating the benefit of reducing infant mortality from malaria. Historically, DDT has had mixed success in Africa; only the countries that are able to find and devote substantial resources towards malaria control have made major advances. DDT might be useful in controlling malaria, but the evidence of its adverse effects on human health needs appropriate research on whether it achieves a favourable balance of risk versus benefit.

And to reiterate-DDT WAS NEVER BANNED FOR MALARIA CONTROL IN AFRICA.
