Is there something wrong with this 1840 Seated Dollar?

This looks like a very nice 1840 Seated Silver Dollar. Do you think it would be body-bagged? Does it look like one of the fakes out there?

If it is real why wouldn't this guy have it graded? It would be worth a good bit.( what would you grade it)

IMO it's an AU coin and possibly cleaned.

Either a fake or an unknown pattern. 1840 seated dollars don't have the motto above the eagle

You beat me to it! To be kind, the seller may have mixed up his pictures.

There are way too many fakes out there. And the quality of the fakes has improved drastically in some cases. I consider all fakes unless I can see in hand, or been graded by the major TPG's. What does the "coin" weigh?

I was thinking the same thing but both pics have almost the exact same look to the coin. image

When someone opens a thread about coins and send links like this from ebay, I usually follow up by perusing the seller's offerings and end up bidding on something.
You should really put EBAY in the thread title image

That's true--the obverse and reverse sort of "go together"--but still could be an honest screw-up.

Hi! Just a heads up. I think you have mixed up your pictures for this 1840 Seated Liberty Dollar. The reverse picture is of an SLD with motto, which were only minted from 1866 to 1873. Your 1840 should not have a motto above the eagle. If the pictures are accurate, this 1840 SLD is a fake. Most potential bidders will recognize this.

Will let you know if I hear back from him.

    Free advertising on ebay...

Do something controversial and make the boards.

I am sure the seller made a simple mistake. I just hope he isn't the one who dipped out all the originality.
From a numismatic view, I sent the seller the following message:
You've made the bigtime (PCGS' forum)
You show an 1840 on the obverse and the reverse side, a date from 1866 to 1873 .
    FYI

This thread reminds me of the drivers who are bent on driving 55 in the fast lane. I am not sure if they do it to make the world a safer place or just to annoy someone who might be in a hurry image

On a side note, I did receive a message back from the seller.

It was a simple " Thank you".

Sometimes guys get duped, too. He may have been the victim of a "snipe" program, winning a coin and re-listing, all the while being ignorant and not knowing that he had a contemporary counterfeit. I ain't saying he is or he isn't a scammer... I just don't know. From the amount of feedbacks, he flips them so fast he doesn't investigate what he's actually listing." Who's got that amount of time ?

An entreprenuer doesn't always make a good numismatist anymore than a numismatist makes a good entrepreneur.

    Just pondering

I also received a response to my message--a plain "Thank You" It appears that he yanked his auction once he became aware of the problem.

Well done, forum members! Besides the motto, are there any other 'tells' to look for? I ask because I thought the luster on the reverse perimeter looked reasonably genuine for a lightly dipped coin, at least from the photo. Until now, most of the fakes I've seen (not that many really) what luster there was generally looked pretty flat or unnatural.

Here's another counterfeit seated dollar. Notice the rough looking edges of the rim. That same look has been present in several fakes I've seen. You can't see it in the photos, but another common trait is that the obverse / reverse orientation is wrong (at least in the ones I've examined). Genuine U.S. coins have the right-side-up 180 degrees apart - all the counterfeits are between 0 and 10 degrees. They also have an un-natural looking color it's kind of chalky looking silver that is very obvious if you place a fake and real coin side-by-side.
