Why is a Jefferson "Spouse" being issued?

Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson died in 1782.

Jefferson became President in 1801.

Instead of no coin we get some stylized tootsie named "Liberty".

Nothing but money-grubbing by the U.S. Mint knowing full well there are sheep to be fleeced.

The enabling legislation requires a coin for each presidency. As for money-grubbing, it's true, but all collectors have to do is put their feet down and refuse to feed the monster, but collectors have shown no backbone in doing that. Instead they march like lambs being led to the slaughter into the Mint's profit factories.

Funny, I find the Jefferson coin much more appealing than the first two. I would ask the question as to why they put spouses on the coins?

He was the author of the Declaration of Independence, first Secretary of State, third President, a philosopher, educator, naturaist, scientist, architect, inventor, farmer, botanist, musician and writer.

I wholeheartedly agree that Thomas Jefferson, one of our most accomplished Presidents, should not be slighted in this program merely because his wife predeceased him and his tenure in office. And I also agree that the proposed design for the Jefferson spouse coin, with the allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, is decidedly the most beautiful design yet in the series. I will also agree that he was most of the things GRBrown mentioned. I cannot agree, however, that he was a photographer, as photography was not developed until a few years after his death in 1826. I would add that he was also a surveyor, and wrote the accepted surveying text that Lewis and Clarke used while exploring the Louisiana Purchase.

As a collector and aficionado of the Bust coinage, I must confess that this is the first time I have ever heard of Miss Liberty refered to as "some stylized tootsie named "Liberty"."

They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin
  • His wife might have died before he became President however it may have been a greater tribute to Jefferson to recognize his wife anyway.

Dolly Madison might have been the first lady during his administration as she was his surrogate hostess at White House functions. I guess her image will be used in a later issue.

All I know is that Jefferson has some black children, and she should be on that coin.
If Sally Hemings is the name of her then so be it and Russ you would be right.

They weren't very black. Hemings was the product of a white father and a black mother, and many of her descendants passed as white in society. I do think it would be cool, though, if she were on the coin.

Whenever I read a 'historical' thread regarding our presidents I like to refer back to one of the most esteemed
historical reference books on the subject. That's right, I go right to Mrs. Swampboys' "First Ladies Cook Cook Book."

    Two excerpts: Thomas Jefferson

Soon after he moved in he abolished the weekly levee and issued a declaration that each year he would hold only two larger receptions-one on New Year’s Day and the other on the Fourth of July to which all were welcome……. This was due at least in part to the fact that much of the time there was no official hostess in residence at the White House.
Whenever he needed a hostess, he would call upon Dolly Madison, the wife of his Secretary of State. She presided at his table and helped to take care of his guests, especially the “female friends” who were entertained at dinner at the White House.

    James Buchanan

With the election of President James Buchanan, our only unmarried President, the Capitol began the gayest social season in its history. The man in the White House was wealthy, an epicurean, a gay bachelor with a flair for society and impeccable knowledge of its ways. The First Lady was to be his niece, Miss Harriet Lane….

What this has to do with coins, I don't know.

I stopped buying Mint products a few years ago and sold off all my silver proof sets, ASEs & gold eagles. I'm done with them.

If others can't control their desire for Mint products, that's their folly.
