PCGS "First Strike" Disclaimer

GoldbullyGoldbully Posts: 18,500 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just received my 10pc. 2007-W ASE Unc. First Strikes from PCGS.......All MS69.image

I noticed that on the reverse of the PCGS label it stated the following:

"Delivered Within First 30 Days of Initial Release.
©PCGS - www.pcgs.com/firststrike"

I do not remember this on the 2006-W ASE's.

Is this something new??

Sounds like a CYA statement, considering all the hubbub last year on this designation.

Thoughts???

CYA statement (on the FS) but what is the % of 70's to everything else with this 2007-W? 3%-8%

It's about time. I was calling for PCGS to take that action over a year ago.

Yep - PCGS is very wise to put the disclaimer on every slab. Sooner or later everyone will know what "First Strike" really means.

I see it as the first step toward discontinuing the designation.

i can only wait to see what the next gimmick is.
would anyone care to propose the next gimmick so we can
look at this thread 2 years from now and chuckle?

edited to add: oh how could i forget. the constortium sticker,
but that is not a tpg creation. ;0)

Registries for each type with a "target" grade? We have the finest known registry and now the low ball registry. When those dry up they'll need to get mid-grade collectors to slab their coins. So maybe they'll have "Fine-12" registry sets and "VF-25" registry sets and "Good-6" registry sets where you maximize points by getting coins slabbed in those grades, and the closer you are, the more registry points you get. Gotta keep inventing new reasons to get people to slab more coins that don't need slabbing! image

[Edit to add: Or maybe a "power to the commons" registry set where, in the spirit of the Low Ball registry, you get MORE points for common coins. After all, everyone's going to slab an 1877 IHC for authenticity and resale power anyway, so there's no reason to give more points for it -- people will slab it anyway! No, submit your VF-30 1903 IHC and get 400 registry points compared to only 10 for the '77! What better way to get people to slab coins that don't need slabbing?

A graded graded coin (essentially a slabbed slab) which you can only get on the coins anniversary. So one year after initial production you send the slabbed coin back again to the same TPG and they slab the slabbed coin serving two purposes:

    1) Receiving a PR70 on a PR70 will show the initial slab is perfect (no scratches etc)
    2) A second PR70 proves that coin is still a 70 and didn’t develop milk spots over the past year.

This then opens up all sorts of possibilities like a Second Strike.

Possible next "collectible" - Last Day of Purchase

Only coins acquired from the mint on the last day the coins could be purchased would qualify.

The coins would have to be sent to the TPG in the unopened mint package and with the purchase receipt showing the day purchased.

Is the market for PCGS 69s plummeting now that they will assign 70s?

I must say it......the 2006-W 20th Anniversary coins are the only bullion coins to collect for "modern antiquity."

    These 2007's are a bust!!!!!!!!

It might have helped if it had been listed in the proper category instead of this -

Listed in category: Coins & Paper Money > Coins: US > Quarters > State Quarters (1999-Now) > 2004
